V-Ray Tip: V-Ray Cryptomatte Workflow for Robust Object and Material Mattes

Cryptomatte AOVs give you instant, anti-aliased masks for objects, materials, and layers directly from your V-Ray renders—no re-rendering, no manual keying. Why Cryptomatte

  • Generates per-pixel, anti-aliased mattes that respect transparency, depth of field, and motion blur.
  • Eliminates the need for pre-planned ID passes and re-renders when creative changes happen late.
  • Works across DCCs supported by V-Ray (3ds Max, Maya, Cinema 4D, SketchUp, and others).
  • Native support in major compositors (Nuke, Fusion) and via plugins for After Effects (ProEXR/Exr-IO).

V-Ray Setup (generic workflow)

  • Add a Render Element: VRayCryptomatte (add multiple if you want object- and material-based mattes separately).
  • Choose ID source:
    • Object/Node Name: best for hero assets and unique props.
    • Material Name: ideal for crowds, instancing, and consistently shaded sets.
    • Layer/Group: useful for broad scene control.
  • Set Depth/Levels to 6–8 for typical scenes. Higher values increase EXR size without much benefit.
  • Output to 32-bit float, multi-layer EXR; enable “Save all render elements.”
  • Use the V-Ray Frame Buffer (VFB) Cryptomatte picker to preview, add, or subtract IDs interactively.

Compositing Notes

  • Nuke: Use the native Cryptomatte node; drag the EXR in, pick IDs, and pipe mattes anywhere in your tree.
  • Fusion: Add a Cryptomatte node, load the EXR, and pick IDs via the viewer.
  • After Effects: Install ProEXR 2.0+ or Exr-IO; apply Cryptomatte effect to the EXR layer to extract masks.
  • Keep the EXR un-tonemapped; apply color management and grade after matte extraction.

Naming and Pipeline Hygiene

  • Lock naming conventions early. Duplicate object names across references can merge mattes; add unique prefixes.
  • For heavy instancing or crowds, prefer material-based Cryptomatte for stable, predictable masks.
  • Avoid renaming materials or reassigning shaders mid-project—this changes matte IDs across shots.
  • Where supported, set explicit Cryptomatte tags/user attributes for bulletproof ID stability across shots.

Performance and Storage

  • Cryptomatte overhead is modest; the bigger cost is EXR size. Keep Depth/Levels reasonable.
  • Store all AOVs in a single multi-layer EXR for tidy I/O; consider lossless compression (ZIP/PIZ).
  • Retire legacy MultiMatte passes unless a specific downstream tool requires them.

Troubleshooting

  • Wrong/vanishing mattes across shots: switch to material- or asset-based IDs, or enforce consistent naming.
  • Soft edges look clipped: confirm 32-bit float EXR and correct view transforms (don’t bake tone mapping into output).
  • After Effects can’t read mattes: verify ProEXR/Exr-IO is installed and that the EXR is multi-layer, 32-bit float.
