Here’s how to decide between V-Ray Denoiser at render time and applying it in post, so you get cleaner frames without sacrificing control.

V-Ray offers multiple denoising paths: render-time denoising bakes the result directly into your Beauty and (optionally) AOVs, while post denoising (VFB layer or standalone) preserves flexibility for grading and compositing. Choosing correctly depends on schedule, deliverables, and the kind of noise you’re fighting.

  • Engines at a glance:
    • V-Ray (NLM): Balanced, detail-friendly, stable for finals; slower than AI options.
    • NVIDIA OptiX: Fastest for IPR and lookdev (GPU); may shimmer on animation.
    • Intel Open Image Denoise (OIDN): High-quality, CPU-based, great detail retention; good middle ground.
  • Use render-time denoising when:
    • You need deadline-oriented finals with predictable, shorter render times.
    • You want denoised AOVs (Reflection, Refraction, Lighting) saved out of the renderer.
    • Interactive lookdev is the priority (OptiX/OIDN during IPR for instant feedback).
    • Farm rendering needs a consistent, automated output with minimal post steps.
  • Use post denoising when:
    • You require maximum compositing latitude (keep both raw and denoised passes).
    • You’re denoising sequences and want temporal consistency (use the V-Ray standalone/temporal mode).
    • You need per-pass tuning and masks unaffected by denoising (e.g., Cryptomatte, Z-depth).
    • You must fine-tune strength and detail preservation shot-by-shot in the VFB or comp.
  • Quality and performance targets:
    • Still images: target a noise threshold around 0.01–0.02 if finalizing without heavy denoise; 0.02–0.03 when relying on denoiser.
    • Animation: allow a slightly higher threshold (0.03–0.05) and prefer temporal denoising in post for stability.
    • Glossy/caustic-heavy scenes: raise samples locally (lights/materials) and let denoiser finish the last 10–20% of noise.
  • Setup best practices:
    • Always add the VRayDenoiser render element—enable “Denoise data” when planning post/temporal workflows.
