V-Ray Tip: Physically Accurate DOF and Bokeh with V-Ray

  • Start physically correct
    • Enable the V-Ray Physical Camera and use photographic exposure (ISO, Shutter Speed, F-number).
    • Work at real-world scale; bokeh depends on focal length, sensor size, subject distance, and aperture.
    • Set Focus Distance explicitly (target, measured distance, or host tool). Don’t guess.
  • Dial the bokeh
    • F-number: Lower values (f/1.4–f/2.8) increase blur and bokeh size; higher values (f/5.6–f/11) tighten it.
    • Blade Count: 5–9 mimics common iris designs; higher counts give rounder highlights.
    • Blade Rotation: Rotate for desired highlight orientation—useful for aligning specular shapes.
    • Center Bias: Push highlights in/out toward the lens center; subtle values feel most photographic.
    • Anisotropy: Introduce cat-eye bokeh near frame edges for wide-open “real lens” character.
    • Bokeh Texture: Load a custom aperture map for signature looks (cinema iris, vintage swirl).
    • Optical Vignetting: Adds believable edge darkening; keep it gentle to avoid over-stylization.
  • Exposure and focus strategy
    • Lock framing (sensor size + focal length), then drive blur with F-number and Focus Distance.
    • For macro: short focus distance + low F-number; for architecture: moderate F-number and careful focus.
    • Use a gray card or neutral surface to check exposure and white balance before pushing bokeh.
  • Clean renders, faster
    • DOF adds sampling cost. In lookdev, use Progressive with a higher Noise Threshold (0.02–0.03); tighten to 0.005–0.01 for finals.
    • Enable the Denoiser for previews; keep a pre-denoise beauty and key AOVs for comp.
    • Tame fireflies: clamp excessively bright HDR pixels, cap light intensities, and avoid tiny ultra-hot emitters.
  • Art-direct highlights
    • Provide bright, small sources (practicals, IES spots, HDRI sun glints) for pleasant bokeh shapes.
    • Adjust light size: smaller lights create crisper, more defined bokeh highlights.
    • Complement with VFB Lens Effects (Bloom/Glare) after DOF to enhance sparkle without hiding noise.
  • In-camera vs. post
    • In-camera DOF captures occlusion, correct highlight shapes, and parallax—superior to Z-Depth blur.
    • If you must do it in post, render a high-quality ZDepth AOV and keep highlight management in 3D.
  • Consistency and QA
    • Save camera presets for lens packs (e.g., 35/50/85mm with tuned bokeh profiles).
    • Use the VFB History to compare DOF variations side-by-side.
    • Benchmark with a fixed test scene and render stamp for reproducibility.
