V-Ray Tip: Per-Light Sampling to Fix Noisy Lights in V-Ray

When a scene converges everywhere except around certain light sources, target those offenders with more samples instead of raising global quality. Here’s how to diagnose and fix noisy lights efficiently in V-Ray.

When to add more light samples

  • Small, bright area lights close to geometry (pin lights, practicals, LED strips).
  • VRayIES profiles creating tight, high-contrast shadows.
  • Specular hotspots from glossy materials (metals, wet surfaces).
  • HDRIs with intense sun pixels or neon signs in Dome Lights.
  • Emissive materials used as primary light sources.

Diagnose the culprit fast

  • Use VFB Light Mix to solo lights and watch noise stabilize or break.
  • Enable Light Select and Specular/Reflection AOVs to see if noise is specular-dominated.
  • Render Region around problematic areas; keep history snapshots for A/B checks.

Apply per-light sampling where it matters

  • Increase samples only on noisy lights. Typical steps: 8 → 16 → 32 → 64. Stop when improvements taper off.
  • For tight IES or small rectangles, prioritize 32–64 samples; for broad softboxes, 16–32 often suffice.
  • For Dome Lights with hotspot HDRIs, try 32–64 samples or switch to Adaptive Dome Light with MIS.
  • Use the Light Lister to batch-adjust samples and compare render stats.

Refine the light’s behavior to reduce variance

  • Emissive geometry: convert to a Mesh Light or enable “Emit Light” on VRayLightMtl so it’s sampled as a light.
  • Set lights to Invisible to avoid ultra-hot pixels in reflections that cause fireflies.
  • Widen IES spread slightly or increase area light size for softer, easier-to-sample shadows.
  • For HDRIs, lower hotspot intensity or use a clamped/blurred copy for reflections while keeping the sharp map for lighting.

Global settings that help without overkill

  • Noise Threshold: keep preview at ~0.02–0.01; finals ~0.01–0.005. Don’t drop it just to fix one noisy light—sample that light instead.
  • Max Ray Intensity: set 20–50 to tame fireflies from extreme highlights while preserving energy.
  • Adaptive Lights: ensure it’s on for scenes with many lights to focus rays where they matter.
  • Glossy materials: verify reasonable reflection/refraction cutoffs and depths; extreme gloss with tiny lights is inherently noisy.

GPU notes

  • V-Ray GPU adaptively samples lights; if per-light samples aren’t exposed, lower the Noise Threshold slightly and use Region renders to confirm gains.
  • Prefer Mesh Lights or “Emit Light” on emissives to improve sampling consistency on GPU as well.

Quick workflow checklist

  • Identify the noisy light via Light Mix/Light Select.
  • Raise that light’s samples incrementally; measure with Render Time/Noise Level in VFB.
  • Stabilize hotspots (Invisible, Max Ray Intensity, HDRI tweaks).
  • Lock global thresholds; only refine globally after per-light fixes.
