V-Ray Tip: Optimizing Ambient Occlusion with VRayDirt in V-Ray

Ambient occlusion (AO) is one of the fastest ways to add contact, depth, and visual clarity to a V-Ray render. Used carefully, it darkens the subtle areas where surfaces meet: under furniture, inside panel gaps, around window frames, and at the junction between objects and floors. The goal is not to make corners visibly dirty—it is to reinforce believable contact shadows that may be too soft or subtle in the primary lighting.

In V-Ray, AO is commonly created with the VRayDirt texture, either applied directly in a material workflow or rendered as a separate VRayExtraTex pass for compositing. The latter is generally the more flexible production approach.

  • Start with a separate render element. Add a VRayExtraTex render element and assign VRayDirt as its texture. This gives you an independent AO pass that can be adjusted in compositing without changing the beauty render.
  • Set a realistic radius. The radius determines how far AO spreads from contact areas. In an architectural scene, begin with a small value relative to the real-world scale of the model. An excessively large radius creates dark, muddy gradients across walls, ceilings, and broad floor areas.
  • Use subdivision controls only when needed. If the AO pass is noisy, increase VRayDirt subdivisions gradually. First confirm that the scene’s overall sampling settings are adequate; oversampling one texture can add render time unnecessarily.
  • Keep the effect subtle in compositing. Multiply the AO pass over the beauty render at low opacity. A restrained contribution often delivers the best result—typically enough to define object contact without making the image look artificially shaded.
  • Exclude objects strategically. Use include/exclude controls when specific assets should not contribute to occlusion. Glass, decorative foliage, proxy-heavy vegetation, or intentionally floating objects may produce unwanted darkening.

For close-up product visualization, AO can help separate small mechanical parts, seams, recessed labels, and layered materials. Use a tighter radius so the occlusion remains confined to physical creases and contact points. For interiors, AO is especially effective beneath cabinetry, at baseboards, around door frames, and where upholstered furniture touches the floor.

A key principle is that AO should support global illumination, not replace it. If a scene needs a very strong AO layer to look grounded, check the lighting first. Inadequate indirect illumination, overly bright environment lighting, missing bevels, or incorrect material roughness are often the real causes of a flat render. Small bevels are particularly important: physically plausible edges catch light and create natural shading that reduces dependence on an artificial occlusion effect.

To avoid common problems, watch for these warning signs:

  • Large dark halos around furniture or architectural openings.
  • Gray or black shading across flat, open surfaces.
  • AO visible through transparent objects or glass partitions.
  • Uniformly dark corners that contradict the direction and softness of the scene lighting.
  • An AO pass so strong that it removes the clean, light-filled character of the design.

For the most controllable workflow, render AO as a pass, preserve it in a high-dynamic-range format, and adjust its strength per shot during compositing. This makes it easy to use more contact definition in detail views while keeping wide architectural images clean and natural.
