Dial in Volume Step Size to balance crisp volumetric detail with practical render times across Environment Fog, VRayVolumeGrid, and other atmospheric effects.

  • What it does: Step Size is the distance between samples along a ray marching through a volume. Smaller steps capture finer details and reduce banding; larger steps render faster but risk blotches, banding, and missed thin features.
  • Units matter: In Environment Fog, Step Size is in scene units; in VRayVolumeGrid it’s relative to voxel size (Ray step % and Shadow step %).
  • Primary vs. shadow steps: You can often set a larger Shadow Step than the primary Ray Step to speed up shadow evaluation without noticeably harming quality.

Practical starting points

  • VRayVolumeGrid (fire/smoke):
    • Look-dev: Ray step % ≈ 1.0–1.5x voxel size; Shadow step % ≈ 2–4x Ray step.
    • Finals: Ray step % ≈ 0.25–0.5x voxel size for hero shots; Shadow step % ≈ 1–2x Ray step.
  • VRayEnvironmentFog:
    • Wide shots: Step Size ≈ 1–2% of the largest scene dimension in view.
    • Close-ups/god-rays: Step Size ≈ 0.1–0.5% of the relevant scale (e.g., room size or beam width).
  • Animation: Keep Step Size constant between frames to avoid temporal shimmer; adjust per-shot, not per-frame.

Quality vs. speed levers that pair well with Step Size

  • Probabilistic Volumetrics (Environment Fog/VolumeGrid): Enable for multiple scattering speedups; if you see grain, slightly reduce Step Size or tighten the volume’s noise threshold.
  • Max Steps: Set a sensible ceiling (e.g., 1024–4096) to prevent rays from oversampling deep fog.
  • Opacity/Scattering Cutoff: Early-terminate rays in dense regions to save time.
  • Adaptive Lights: Speeds up scenes with many lights affecting volumes.
  • Denoiser in VFB: Great for residual volumetric noise, but it won’t fix banding from overly large Step Sizes.

Scenario-based guidance

  • God-rays through windows: Reduce Step Size until banding in beams disappears; keep Shadow Step 2–3x Ray Step to retain speed.
  • Dense smoke with emission: Tie Ray step % to the smallest illuminated detail. If flame tongues flicker or appear “chunky,” drop Ray step % by 25–50%.
  • Large-scale haze/exteriors: Increase Step Size moderately; rely on Adaptive Lights and Denoiser to maintain clarity.

Troubleshooting checklist

  • Banding/contours along beams: Decrease Step Size or enable probabilistic volumetrics with a modest Step Size.
  • Splotchy shadows in fog: Lower Shadow Step or increase light sampling; verify Adaptive Lights is on.
  • Unexpected render blowups: Cap Max Steps and use Opacity Cutoff; confirm scene units are correct.

Workflow tips

  • Iterate with larger Step Sizes during look-dev, then refine for finals.
  • Preset pairs: Save “Preview,” “General,” and “Hero” Step Size presets per show to standardize outputs.
