Rhino 3D Tip: SubD and NURBS: Clean Conversion and Export Workflow

Moving between SubD for speed and NURBS for precision is a powerful Rhino workflow. Here’s how to transition cleanly, keep topology tidy, and export confidently.

When to choose each:

  • Start with SubD when exploring organic, ergonomic, or soft-transition forms that benefit from rapid sculpting and edge loop control.
  • Start with NURBS when you need exact dimensions, fillets, and manufacturing-grade surfaces from the outset.
  • Mix both: block the overall form in SubD, then convert to NURBS for final details, tight blends, and downstream CAD/CAM.

NURBS to SubD (concepting from precise forms):

  • Clean first: use MergeAllFaces, RemoveMultiKnot, and ShrinkTrimmedSrf to simplify the Brep before conversion.
  • Use QuadRemesh with SubD output enabled for controlled, quad-dominant topology. Add guide curves for flow where needed.
  • For simple, boxy polysurfaces, try ToSubD (solid option) to keep edges aligned and reduce retopology time.
  • Avoid tiny sliver faces and complex trims; they create messy SubD poles and unnecessary edge loops.

Editing in SubD (keep it light and predictable):

  • Favor quads, minimize stars (valence ≥5). Fewer faces + smarter edge loops = better later NURBS conversion.
  • Use InsertEdge and SlideEdge to sharpen control in localized areas without over-subdividing the whole model.
  • Mark hard detail with Crease on key edges/vertices; Uncrease to restore smoothness as design evolves.
  • Leverage Reflect for live symmetry on character, footwear, and product shells; turn it off only to finalize asymmetry.
  • Keep SubD face count lean. Let smoothing do the work; add density only where silhouette or tangency demands it.

SubD to NURBS (finalizing for manufacturing, filleting, or drafting):

  • Before converting, prune density: collapse loops or dissolve edges that don’t affect silhouette.
  • Use ToNURBS to generate Breps: smooth regions become multi-span NURBS, creased edges become sharp boundaries.
  • Post-conversion, run ShowEdges (Naked/Non-manifold) and MergeAllFaces to tidy results for IGES/STEP export.
  • Validate with Zebra and CurvatureAnalysis; fix fairness in SubD first if possible—NURBS will inherit your topology quality.

Real-time and rendering path:

  • ExtractControlPolygon from SubD for an all-quad mesh suited to game engines and renderers.
  • Use Unwrap to create efficient UVs; keep loops logical to minimize seams and distortion.
  • Export OBJ/FBX with smoothing groups hard along creases for crisp highlights.

Compact workflow recipe:

  • Sketch in SubD primitives (SubDBox, SubDSphere) → establish loops → crease critical edges.
  • Refine with InsertEdge/SlideEdge → Reflect for symmetry → keep quads clean.
  • Convert via ToNURBS for detail fillets, booleans, and drafting → analyze, purge, and export.

Common pitfalls to avoid:

  • Over-subdividing before ToNURBS—produces heavy Breps and sluggish CAM.
  • Messy stars near key highlights—causes ripples you’ll chase later in NURBS.
  • Ignoring units/tolerances; set these early to prevent tiny gaps after conversion.
