Rhino 3D Tip: Streamline Rhino Object Selection with SelName and Consistent Naming Conventions

In a busy Rhino model, object names can become a fast, reliable selection system. The SelName command lets you select geometry by its assigned name, making it easier to isolate repeated parts, review components, and make targeted edits without searching manually.

To use this workflow, first assign clear names to important objects with the Name command. Select one or more objects, run Name, and enter a descriptive identifier such as Handle_Left, Glass_Panel_A, or M6_Fastener. Later, run SelName to select objects that match a name.

  • Name objects by function, not appearance. A name such as Door_Hinge remains useful even if the part’s material, color, or layer changes.
  • Use consistent prefixes. For example, name parts BRKT_001, BRKT_002, and BRKT_003. This makes related components easier to find and maintain.
  • Use names for recurring design elements. Hardware, panels, vents, handles, logos, fixtures, and custom details are all strong candidates for object naming.
  • Name grouped selections together. If several objects form one assembly, select them all and assign the same name. SelName can then recall the complete assembly in one action.

A practical example is a product model containing multiple handles. Rather than selecting each handle visually, assign all handle objects the name Handle. When the design changes, run SelName, choose or enter Handle, and Rhino selects every matching object. You can then move, scale, replace, assign a material, change layers, or export the selected set efficiently.

Object names are especially useful when paired with Rhino’s other organization tools:

  • Layers: Use layers to control visibility, color, locking, and broad model structure; use names to identify specific parts across those layers.
  • Groups: Groups preserve a working relationship between objects, while names provide a searchable label for selection and review.
  • Named selections: When a selection must be recalled repeatedly, object names provide a simple, lightweight method that is easy to understand later.
  • Selection filters: Combine SelName with selection filters when you need to limit selection to specific object types, such as curves, surfaces, meshes, or blocks.

For more controlled searches, use wildcard-style naming conventions. For instance, naming objects LEG_A, LEG_B, LEG_C, and LEG_D creates an orderly system for furniture components. Even when a model grows substantially, clear names reduce ambiguity and speed up revisions.

Keep names short, readable, and standardized across your team. Avoid vague labels such as Object1 or NewPart; they add little value when the model is reopened months later. A predictable format—category, location, and version where needed—helps turn the Rhino model into a more manageable production document.
