Leader lines clarify intent fast. Here’s how to create clean, consistent callouts that read well in both model and layouts.

• Start with the right tool
  • Use the Leader command for arrowed callouts with text. For quick numeric balloons, consider Dot, and for plain notes use Text.
  • In Properties, set Arrowhead, Landing (dogleg) length, Text height, and Justification before placing many leaders.
• Standardize with DimStyles
  • Create a dedicated DimStyle for leaders: Document Properties > Annotation Styles.
  • Define text height, arrow size, font, mask, and units once; reuse everywhere to keep drawings uniform.
  • Use MatchAnnotation to quickly align existing leaders to your chosen style.
• Make them readable
  • Enable Text Mask on leaders that cross hatches or dense geometry. Choose a small offset to avoid hiding too much.
  • Set a consistent dogleg length and keep leaders at clean angles (15°, 30°, 45°) using Ortho or SmartTrack for alignment.
  • Avoid leader tails crossing objects. Add short landings so text blocks don’t “touch” the arrowhead.
• Smarter notes with Text Fields
  • Insert fields in leader text to auto-update content: click the “fx” button in the text editor.
  • Useful fields: Object Name, Layer, User Text, Area, Length, Bounding Box size, or File/Date metadata.
  • Example: “Panel %% — Perimeter %%” keeps specs live as geometry changes.
• Model space vs. Layouts
  • For documentation, place leaders on Layouts so they plot at true size regardless of detail scale.
  • If you annotate in Model space, enable model space scaling in your annotation style to maintain consistent plotted size.
  • Keep annotation layers separate (e.g., ANNO_Leaders, ANNO_Text) with controlled print color/lineweight.

  • Use Osnaps (End, Mid, Cen) to anchor arrowheads exactly where intent matters.
  • Tap Tab to lock direction while placing the landing; use Gumball to nudge text blocks neatly after creation.
  • Group related callouts and align their text baselines for a professional, grid-like look.

  • Create a toolbar button or alias that starts Leader with your preferred style: ! _-Leader _Style "LEAD_3mm_Masked"
  • Duplicate a leader and edit text to keep spacing and alignment consistent.
  • Use MatchProperties for quick arrow and text appearance parity when styles differ.
• QA before publishing
  • In Layouts, toggle Print Preview to verify text height, arrow size, and lineweights.
  • Check that fields evaluate correctly and that masked text doesn’t clip essential detail.
