A clean viewport screenshot is one of the fastest ways to communicate design intent, document progress, or share a concept before committing time to a full render. Rhino’s _ViewCaptureToFile command gives you control over the active viewport image, making it ideal for presentations, design reviews, portfolios, and social media updates.

Before capturing anything, prepare the viewport as deliberately as you would prepare a camera shot. The quality of the image depends as much on what you hide or emphasize as on the export settings.

  • Choose an appropriate display mode. Use Rendered or Raytraced for material-focused imagery, Technical for crisp design documentation, and Ghosted when internal components need to remain visible.
  • Set a useful view. Perspective views are effective for communicating form and depth, while Parallel views are better for orthographic design review and technical reference.
  • Remove distractions. Hide construction geometry, reference objects, unnecessary layers, grids, axes, and control points when they do not support the message.
  • Use a consistent visual language. Match the display mode, background, object colors, and camera angle across a series of images so the project looks intentional and organized.

Run _ViewCaptureToFile to save an image of the active Rhino viewport. Unlike taking a standard operating-system screenshot, this command can generate a higher-resolution image than the viewport currently displayed on your monitor. This is particularly useful when you need a sharp image for a slide deck, a printed design board, or a post on LinkedIn, Instagram, or a project page.

Pay particular attention to these capture settings:

  • Width and Height: Enter the final pixel dimensions needed for the destination. For example, use a square format for certain social posts or a wide landscape proportion for presentations.
  • Scale: Increase the scale factor when you need more detail without changing the intended image proportion. Higher values create larger files, so use only as much resolution as necessary.
  • Transparent background: When available for the chosen file format and display mode, transparency lets you place the model over a branded graphic, presentation background, or layout later.
  • File format: PNG is an excellent choice for sharp linework, diagrams, and images requiring transparency. JPEG is useful for smaller file sizes and photographic-style viewport images.

For quick copy-and-paste workflows, use _ViewCaptureToClipboard. This is practical when sending a progress image in an email, adding it to a report, or pasting it directly into image-editing or presentation software.

To improve screenshots further, create a dedicated capture setup in your Rhino file:

  • Create a Named View for each approved camera angle.
  • Save separate layer states for “modeling,” “review,” and “presentation” views.
  • Apply materials selectively; even simple materials can clarify the difference between components.
  • Use _ZoomSelected or _ZoomExtents before capture to frame the subject efficiently.
  • Consider a subtle ground plane and shadows in Rendered mode to give objects visual weight.

A viewport capture does not need to replace a polished rendering. It is a fast communication tool: clear, repeatable, and closely tied to the live model. When your viewport is well composed, screenshots become valuable design assets rather than temporary evidence of work in progress.
