Technical drawings become easier to read when line patterns communicate intent, not decoration. In Rhino, linetypes help distinguish centerlines, hidden edges, cut lines, property limits, reference geometry, and construction information without adding unnecessary labels.
Start by treating linetypes as part of your drawing standard. A consistent system makes layouts clearer for clients, fabricators, consultants, and anyone receiving exported DWG or PDF files.
To manage linetypes, run the Linetype command. Rhino’s linetype manager lets you load available patterns, inspect their definitions, and remove unused entries from a file. Keep the document clean by loading only the styles required by the project or office standard.
Once a linetype is available, assign it through the Properties panel. Select an object, open its object properties, and choose the desired linetype. For organized documentation, it is usually better to assign linetypes By Layer. This allows every object on a “Hidden,” “Centerline,” or “Construction” layer to update consistently when the layer standard changes.

The most common linetype problem is scale. A dashed pattern that looks correct in a large model may appear nearly continuous—or excessively spaced—when viewed in a layout detail or printed at a different scale. Before final output, inspect your drawing in the actual layout and at the intended page scale. Adjust the document linetype scale when needed, then verify that dashes and gaps remain recognizable without competing with dimensions or text.
Use Print Preview or Rhino’s print display tools to check the final result rather than relying only on the model viewport. A line pattern may look acceptable on screen but become too light, too dense, or visually broken after printing. Combine linetypes with intentional print widths and color settings for the strongest hierarchy.
For DWG export, confirm that the recipient’s CAD standard uses compatible linetypes. Test-export a representative layout when collaborating with external teams. This small step can prevent hidden lines from becoming continuous or centerlines from displaying at an unusable scale.
