Rhino 3D Tip: Precise One-Directional Scaling with Scale1D in Rhino

When a model needs to become longer, taller, narrower, or wider without changing its other proportions, Rhino’s one-direction scaling tools provide a controlled solution. The primary command is Scale1D, which scales selected geometry along a single axis defined by two reference points.

This is especially useful for adjusting product dimensions, resizing architectural components, refining layouts, or modifying imported geometry while preserving critical cross-sections. Instead of rebuilding an object, you can make a precise dimensional correction in seconds.

  • Select the geometry you want to modify.
  • Run Scale1D.
  • Specify a base point. This point remains fixed during the transformation.
  • Pick a second point to establish the original direction and reference length.
  • Enter a new scale factor, pick a new location, or use the Reference option to scale to an exact target length.

The Reference option is often the most reliable choice. For example, if a cabinet is currently 600 mm wide and must become 750 mm wide, run Scale1D, choose the fixed side as the base point, select the existing 600 mm width as the reference distance, then enter 750. Rhino scales only in that defined direction, keeping the depth and height unchanged.

For predictable results, work from meaningful reference points:

  • Use Object Snaps such as End, Mid, Center, and Point to establish an accurate scaling direction.
  • Set the base point on the edge, face, or datum that must remain in place.
  • Use orthographic viewports—Top, Front, or Right—when the intended direction aligns with the model’s world axes.
  • Turn on Ortho when defining a strictly horizontal or vertical scaling direction.

Scale1D is not limited to solids. It can scale curves, surfaces, text, blocks, meshes, and groups. However, consider the design consequences before using it. Scaling a circle in one direction turns it into an ellipse. Scaling a filleted solid can change radii and may produce geometry that no longer matches manufacturing requirements. In these cases, rebuilding the affected feature may be more appropriate.

For quick visual adjustments, the Gumball also supports one-axis scaling. Select an object, click and drag a Gumball scale handle, and constrain the adjustment along the corresponding axis. This is efficient during early concept work, but Scale1D with a numeric reference is better when dimensions must be exact.

Before scaling complex models, check whether objects are grouped, blocked, or linked through History. Scaling geometry with recorded History can update dependent objects, which may be useful—but it can also create unexpected results if the construction logic was not designed for the change. Save an incremental version before making major proportional edits.

Afterward, verify the result with Distance, BoundingBox, or object properties. A quick measurement confirms that the target dimension changed while unaffected dimensions remained intact.
