Rhino 3D Tip: Named CPlanes for Local Workplane Control

Named Construction Planes (CPlanes) let you draw, snap, and annotate orthogonally on any face or assembly—without reorienting geometry or views.

When and why to use Named CPlanes:

  • Modeling on angled faces, fixtures, or sub-assemblies with accurate orthographic input.
  • Creating consistent 2D details (Plan command) from local orientations.
  • Speeding up fabrication prep by aligning drilling, slotting, or sketching to local part frames.
  • Keeping orientation presets across sessions, teams, and files.

Core workflow:

  • Create a local CPlane
    • Run CPlane and pick an option:
      • Surface: Click a planar face to match its frame.
      • 3Point: Define origin, X, then Y directions.
      • Object: Use edges or curves to define axes.
      • World Top/Front/Right: Reset to defaults quickly.
    • Use Plan to look straight at the current CPlane for clean drafting.
  • Save as a Named CPlane
    • Open Panels > Named CPlanes (or run NamedCPlane).
    • Click Save and give it a clear, project-specific name (e.g., “Bracket_A_Face1”).
  • Recall and reuse
    • Double-click a named item in the panel to activate it in the current viewport.
    • Right-click a named CPlane for per-viewport or global application.
    • Pair with Plan to update the view immediately.

Pro tips for reliability and speed:

  • Turn on Osnap Project to constrain snaps to the active CPlane—great for wireframes and slot layouts.
  • Use consistent naming conventions with prefixes (e.g., “ASM1_”, “JIG_”, “LFT_”) so filters and search work well.
  • Mirror your Named Views and Named CPlanes names (e.g., “MotorMount_TOP”) to move seamlessly between looking and drawing.
  • Store essential CPlanes in your template file so every new project inherits them.
  • Export/Import via the panel’s gear menu to share orientation standards across teams and vendors.
  • For dimensions and Make2D, set the correct CPlane first to ensure expected orientation and text alignment.
  • If a surface changes, quickly re-derive the CPlane with CPlane > Surface and overwrite the existing named entry.
  • Combine with Gumball in CPlane-aligned views for intuitive axis moves and numeric inputs.

Troubleshooting:

  • Unexpected snaps off plane? Check that Project is enabled only when needed, and verify active CPlane per viewport.
  • Geometry looks skewed after switching? Run Plan to realign the camera to the active CPlane.
  • Inconsistent arrow directions? Use Dir on curves/surfaces and rebuild your 3Point CPlane with a clear X, then Y pick order.
