Rhino 3D Tip: Managing Rhino Object Attributes for Organized Models

Every object in Rhino carries more information than its visible geometry. Object attributes control how geometry is organized, displayed, selected, documented, and rendered. Managing them deliberately keeps complex models clear, editable, and ready for downstream work.

To inspect or modify attributes, select one or more objects and open the Properties panel. The attributes section lets you assign properties directly, while many settings can also be controlled through layers. A reliable practice is to use layers for broad project standards and object-level attributes only where an individual exception is needed.

  • Name objects for meaningful selection. Assign an object name in Properties when a part has a functional identity, such as “Handle_Base,” “Glass_Panel_A,” or “M6_Fastener.” Object names make it easier to find components with the SelName command and improve clarity when coordinating a model with a team.
  • Use colors with intent. An object can display By Layer, By Object, or By Parent color behavior. Keep most geometry set to By Layer so that a layer color change updates the entire category consistently. Use By Object for temporary review markup, exceptions, or visual coding that must remain distinct.
  • Control linetypes and print widths. Curves can inherit linetypes and print widths from their layer or receive custom object-level values. This is particularly useful for drawings: a hidden edge, centerline, cutting line, or diagram overlay may require a specific linetype without forcing unrelated objects on the same layer to change.
  • Assign materials at the appropriate level. Materials may be set By Layer, By Object, or By Parent. By-layer materials are ideal for architectural categories and product assemblies. By-object materials are useful for a single label, accent part, or product finish variation. Verify the assignment in Rendered mode before producing final imagery.
  • Add user text for searchable metadata. In the User Text section of Properties, attach custom key/value data such as PartNumber=AX-104, Finish=Brushed Steel, or Status=Approved. User text is valuable for scheduling, Grasshopper workflows, automated selection, and exporting structured project information.
  • Use display order for 2D clarity. When curves, hatches, text, or annotations overlap in a plan or layout, use BringToFront and SendToBack. Display order affects readability without changing the actual model geometry.

A practical workflow is to select related objects, set their attributes in one operation, and then test the result in the display mode or layout where the model will be used. For example, assign all hardware to a “Hardware” layer, keep color and material set to By Layer, then apply object names and part-number user text only to individual components that require identification.

Be careful when copying geometry between files. Objects can bring custom materials, annotation styles, linetypes, and user text with them. Run Purge periodically to remove unused resources, but review the model first so that required standards are not deleted.
