Every object in Rhino carries more information than its visible geometry. Object attributes control how geometry is organized, displayed, selected, documented, and rendered. Managing them deliberately keeps complex models clear, editable, and ready for downstream work.
To inspect or modify attributes, select one or more objects and open the Properties panel. The attributes section lets you assign properties directly, while many settings can also be controlled through layers. A reliable practice is to use layers for broad project standards and object-level attributes only where an individual exception is needed.
SelName command and improve clarity when coordinating a model with a team.PartNumber=AX-104, Finish=Brushed Steel, or Status=Approved. User text is valuable for scheduling, Grasshopper workflows, automated selection, and exporting structured project information.BringToFront and SendToBack. Display order affects readability without changing the actual model geometry.A practical workflow is to select related objects, set their attributes in one operation, and then test the result in the display mode or layout where the model will be used. For example, assign all hardware to a “Hardware” layer, keep color and material set to By Layer, then apply object names and part-number user text only to individual components that require identification.
Be careful when copying geometry between files. Objects can bring custom materials, annotation styles, linetypes, and user text with them. Run Purge periodically to remove unused resources, but review the model first so that required standards are not deleted.
Well-managed attributes turn a Rhino file from a collection of shapes into an organized information model. They also make selection faster, rendering more consistent, drawings cleaner, and handoff more reliable. For Rhino tools, training, and workflow resources, visit NOVEDGE’s Rhino collection.
