Rhino 3D Tip: Isolate and Repair Open Curves with SelOpenCrv

Isolate and fix problem curves fast with the SelOpenCrv command. It finds every open curve in your model so you can repair profiles before joining, hatching, extruding, or exporting.

What SelOpenCrv does

  • Selects all non-closed curves in the document (within current tolerance).
  • Works on lines, arcs, polylines, NURBS curves, and exploded Make2D output.
  • Pairs well with repair tools to close gaps and prepare watertight profiles.

When to use it

  • Before creating hatches, offsets, or booleans that require closed boundaries.
  • After Make2D to quickly locate broken silhouettes and section outlines.
  • Before CNC/laser cutting to ensure clean, continuous toolpaths.
  • Prior to extrusions, Revolve, or Sweep commands that need closed inputs.

Fast workflow to isolate and fix

  • Run SelOpenCrv to highlight all open curves.
  • Click the Selection Filter (status bar) and enable only Curves to avoid picking other geometry (SelectionFilter to toggle by command).
  • Temporarily focus on those curves:
    • Use Isolate to hide everything else, or
    • Use Invert then Hide to keep only open curves visible.
  • Diagnose gaps:
    • Turn on endpoints with ShowEnds to visualize where curves fail to meet.
    • Use Distance to check tiny gaps relative to document tolerance.
  • Repair quickly:
    • Join for coincident ends; increase tolerance only if necessary.
    • CloseCrv to seal near-closed loops automatically.
    • Extend / ExtendCrv, BlendCrv, or Match for controlled endpoints.
    • Rebuild or FitCrv to simplify jittery inputs before closing.
  • Validate: Re-run SelOpenCrv. If nothing selects, you’re clear. Optionally run SelClosedCrv to confirm your closed set.

Power tips

  • Create a one-click isolate macro for audits:
    • ! _SelOpenCrv _Isolate
  • Add an alias (Options > Aliases) like “o?” for SelOpenCrv to check models frequently.
  • Use SelShortCrv to find tiny sliver curves that prevent clean joins.
  • Keep tolerances project-appropriate (File > Properties > Units). Too tight = joins fail; too loose = dirty geometry.
  • For planar profiles, set a working CPlane and use ProjectToCPlane before joining to remove subtle Z-misalignment.
  • On heavy Make2D drawings, SelOpenCrv + CurveBoolean can rebuild clean, closed outlines fast.

Common pitfalls to avoid

  • Accidentally mixing curve degrees and densities—rebuild before attempting smooth closures.
  • Forgetting to re-check after edits—always re-run SelOpenCrv as a final gate.
  • Over-widening tolerance—close gaps with intent; only relax tolerance when justified.
