Rhino 3D Tip: Efficient Repeated Object Selection with SelSimilar

When a Rhino model contains repeated geometry, selecting objects one at a time is inefficient and can lead to missed elements. Rhino’s SelSimilar command is a fast way to build a selection set based on shared object characteristics, helping you edit, organize, or inspect repeated parts with confidence.

Start by selecting one representative object, then run SelSimilar. Rhino searches the document for objects that match the selected object according to the criteria you specify. This is especially useful in mechanical models, architectural drawings, furniture layouts, and any file containing repeated curves, surfaces, blocks, or solids.

  • Select one “sample” object first. For example, select one bolt, circle, extrusion, or repeated panel.
  • Run SelSimilar. Type the command in Rhino’s command line, then review the available matching criteria.
  • Choose only the properties that matter. A narrow set of criteria prevents Rhino from selecting unrelated geometry.
  • Confirm the selection visually. Zoom through the model before applying a destructive edit such as delete, move, or layer reassignment.

The available options can vary by object type, but common matching characteristics include:

  • Object type: Find other curves, surfaces, meshes, annotations, blocks, or other comparable objects.
  • Layer: Select objects that share the same layer as the sample object.
  • Color: Useful when object color has been used as a visual classification system.
  • Line type and print width: Helpful when preparing documentation or cleaning imported CAD geometry.
  • Material: Useful for reviewing render assignments and identifying objects intended to share a finish.
  • Geometry-specific attributes: Depending on the selected geometry, Rhino can compare properties such as curve degree, closed status, dimensions, or other relevant characteristics.

A practical example: imagine a product model containing twenty identical ventilation slots. Select one slot curve, run SelSimilar, and choose criteria that identify curves with the same geometry. Once selected, you can move all slots to a dedicated layer, assign them a display color, create a Boolean cutting workflow, or verify that every slot has been included before manufacturing export.

Use SelSimilar carefully when working with imported files. Imported DWG, STEP, or IGES data may contain objects that appear identical but differ subtly in layer, color, curve structure, or object type. If the command selects too few objects, reduce the number of active criteria. If it selects too many, add a more restrictive criterion such as layer or color.

For even more control, combine this workflow with Rhino’s selection tools:

  • Use SelNone to clear an uncertain selection immediately.
  • Use Invert when you need to act on everything except the matching objects.
  • Use the SelectionFilter panel to prevent unintended object types from entering your selection set.
  • Assign repeated objects to logical layers after selecting them, making future edits much faster.
