Layout detail views turn a Rhino model into a clear, scalable drawing set without duplicating geometry. A detail is essentially a window into model space placed on a Layout page, allowing you to show plan, elevation, section, and perspective views at different scales on the same sheet.

For professional documentation, the key is to treat each detail view as a controlled presentation rather than simply a viewport placed on paper. This approach keeps drawings coordinated: update the model once, and every unlocked detail can reflect the revision.

  • Start with a purposeful Layout. Run Layout, choose the intended paper size, and confirm the correct printer and page orientation in Print settings. Establish page sizes early so annotation and scale decisions remain consistent throughout the project.
  • Create details for specific drawing tasks. Use the Detail command to draw a rectangular viewport on the Layout. Double-click inside it to activate the detail, then use standard Rhino view commands such as Top, Front, Right, Perspective, or SetView.
  • Set the scale precisely. While a detail is active, use the detail scale control in the status bar or the Properties panel. Choose a standard value such as 1:10, 1:20, 1:50, or 1/4" = 1'-0", depending on your unit system. Do not estimate scale by zooming; use the defined scale setting so dimensions and printed output remain accurate.
  • Lock every approved detail. Once the view and scale are correct, select the detail border and lock it in the Properties panel. A locked detail prevents accidental panning, zooming, rotation, and scale changes while you annotate the page.

A useful practice is to assign each detail a visual role. For example, a plan detail may use a technical display mode with visible edges, while a presentation detail may use Rendered or Arctic mode. In the detail’s Properties, control the display mode independently when needed. This makes it possible to combine clean orthographic documentation with polished model imagery on one Layout.

Use layers strategically inside details. If a certain view needs only walls, furniture, and dimensions, hide nonessential layers while that detail is active. For more dependable control across a multi-sheet set, consider saved Layer States. They allow you to restore a predefined visibility configuration quickly rather than manually adjusting layers every time.

For sections and enlarged areas, use ClippingPlane in model space and position the detail view to reveal the cut. You can also create a second detail at a larger scale for localized information, such as joinery, façade conditions, or product features. Keep the crop boundary intentional: the detail frame should support the hierarchy of the page, not compete with the drawing.

  • Use parallel projection for measurable plans, elevations, sections, and orthographic details.
  • Use perspective or two-point perspective for presentation views.
  • Apply consistent display modes, line weights, and annotation styles across comparable sheets.
  • Name Layout pages logically, such as A-101 Plan, A-201 Elevations, or D-501 Details.
  • Before publishing, inspect every detail at print scale and confirm that all detail views are locked.
