In Rhino, SubD creases and corners give you targeted control over edge sharpness without sacrificing the smooth, editable character of subdivision modeling. Used intentionally, they let a single SubD object transition between soft organic surfaces and crisp manufactured details.
A SubD surface naturally smooths as it subdivides. This is ideal for ergonomic products, character forms, furniture, and flowing concept models, but it can make intentional hard edges look too soft. Creases and corner settings solve that problem by controlling how Rhino subdivides selected components.
Start by selecting the SubD edge or edges that require definition. Run Crease to sharpen them, or use Uncrease if the edge later proves too rigid. In many workflows, you can also Ctrl+Shift-select SubD components directly, making it easy to adjust only the edges or vertices involved. To make a vertex behave like a defined corner, select it and use the appropriate SubD vertex option in Rhino’s commands or Properties panel.
A practical example is a rounded electronics enclosure. Model the overall volume as a low-density SubD cage first. Keep the large front, back, and side areas smooth so they maintain broad, clean reflections. Then crease only the perimeter edges that represent the intended panel break. If the corners appear overly rounded, define the relevant vertices as corners. The result is a model that has both soft, premium curvature and controlled manufactured detail.

It is also important to distinguish a creased edge from a support-loop strategy. A crease is efficient and direct when the design requires a sharp result. Support loops provide more nuanced control over the radius and highlight roll-off near an edge. For consumer products, soft goods, and forms with visible reflections, support loops often produce a more realistic transition. For conceptual hard-surface shapes or clearly defined panel separations, creases can be the faster choice.
Before converting a SubD object to NURBS, inspect all creased areas carefully. The conversion preserves the intended form, but unnecessary creases or poor topology can create surfaces that are harder to edit downstream. Build and validate the SubD design first, then convert only when NURBS operations, documentation, or production requirements demand it.
