Accurate printing in Rhino depends on treating the layout as a controlled document rather than a screenshot of the model. A reliable workflow ensures that lineweights, scale, annotations, and viewport views remain consistent from screen to PDF or paper.

Begin in a Layout, not directly from model space. Layouts are designed for documentation: they contain paper-space dimensions, title blocks, detail viewports, and print settings. Create one with the Layout command, then select the intended paper size and orientation before arranging any content.

  • Set the layout units correctly. If the sheet is intended to be printed in millimeters, use millimeters for the layout. If it is an architectural sheet in inches, configure it accordingly. This prevents confusing scale conversions later.
  • Use Detail viewports for model views. Double-click inside a Detail to activate it, establish the required view, and assign a scale such as 1:50, 1:20, 1/4" = 1'-0", or 1" = 10'. Lock the Detail once the view is approved so accidental zooming does not alter the printed scale.
  • Check the Detail scale rather than estimating it. Select the Detail viewport and use the Properties panel to set an exact scale. This is more dependable than zooming until the view “looks right.”

For technical drawings, choose a display mode that communicates form clearly. Technical, Pen, Hidden, or a custom display mode can produce clean linework. In each Detail, use its Properties to override the display mode if necessary. For example, a perspective presentation detail may use Rendered mode while orthographic elevations use Technical mode.

Lineweight management is equally important. Rhino can print using object display colors, layer colors, or assigned print widths. A practical convention is to control lineweights by layer:

  • Use heavier widths for section cuts and primary outlines.
  • Use medium widths for visible edges and major dimensions.
  • Use light widths for hatches, reference geometry, and secondary detail.
  • Keep construction geometry on a non-printing layer when it should not appear in the final sheet.

Before printing, inspect annotation scale. Dimensions, leaders, text, and hatches should be created in layout space whenever possible, because their paper height remains stable regardless of the model scale inside each Detail. If model-space annotations are required, verify that their annotation scale matches the target Detail scale.

Use Print and review the preview carefully. Set the output to Vector when producing line-based PDFs, since vectors preserve crisp curves, text, and lineweights at any zoom level. Use Raster only when the chosen display mode, rendered imagery, transparency, or visual effects require it. For PDF output, confirm the destination, page size, orientation, and DPI before saving.

A useful final check is to export a test PDF and measure a known dimension in a PDF viewer. If a 100 mm reference line measures 100 mm after printing at 100%, the sheet scale is working correctly. Also confirm that the printer dialog has not applied options such as “Fit to Page,” which can silently invalidate a carefully set scale.
