Revit Tip: Using Halftone to Clarify Revit Coordination Views

Halftone display is a simple but powerful Revit visibility tool for making secondary information recede while keeping the active design scope clear. It is especially useful in coordination views, demolition plans, dependent views, and documentation sheets where linked models or background elements must remain visible without competing with the primary model.

In Revit, halftone does not remove elements. Instead, it displays them using lighter lines and patterns, helping readers immediately distinguish reference information from the content that requires attention.

  • Use halftone for linked models. Architectural, structural, and MEP links often provide essential coordination context, but they can overwhelm a discipline-specific view. Open Visibility/Graphics Overrides with VG or VV, go to the Revit Links tab, select the linked model, and adjust its display settings. Applying halftone to the link allows the current discipline’s elements to remain visually dominant.
  • Apply it to underlays. When showing an adjacent level as an underlay in a floor plan or reflected ceiling plan, halftone helps communicate that the elements belong to another level. This is valuable for ceiling coordination, stair layouts, and plan references.
  • Clarify phased documentation. In renovation projects, existing elements are commonly displayed in halftone so proposed construction is easier to read. Confirm that your phase filters and graphic overrides follow office standards, particularly for existing, demolished, and new work.
  • Use it for selected categories. In the Model Categories or Annotation Categories tabs of Visibility/Graphics, select a category and enable its halftone setting. For example, you may halftone furniture, entourage, room separation lines, or selected annotation categories in a presentation-oriented plan.

For a project-wide, consistent result, avoid applying halftone settings individually to every view. Build the settings into a View Template. A coordinated template can control:

  • Halftone display for Revit links
  • Imported CAD background files
  • Underlay behavior
  • Phase graphic overrides
  • Filters that identify elements by parameter, workset, or category

This approach prevents visual inconsistency between plans, elevations, sections, and detail views. It also reduces the risk that one sheet is issued with a dark, distracting coordination background while another follows the intended graphic standard.

Halftone settings can be refined in Manage > Additional Settings > Halftone/Underlay. Here, adjust the brightness, contrast, and line weight used by halftoned elements. Test these values against your office’s print settings rather than relying only on what looks good on screen. A halftone effect that appears subtle on a high-resolution monitor may print too faintly, especially in black-and-white PDF or plotted output.

A practical workflow is to create one coordination view template per discipline. For example, an architectural coordination plan may display structural and MEP links in halftone, while a structural coordination plan may halftone the architectural link but retain structural framing at normal weight. Save these templates with clear names so team members can apply the correct graphics quickly.

Remember that halftone is a graphic communication tool, not a substitute for proper visibility management. If a linked model, category, or CAD layer is irrelevant to the view, hide it instead. Use halftone only when the information still provides useful context.
