Revit Tip: Type-Driven Curtain Wall Grids and Mullions

Curtain wall grids and mullions become effortless when you let types do the heavy lifting, then refine only where needed.

Start with a purpose-built type

  • Duplicate a curtain wall type and name it clearly (e.g., CW_Storefront_10ft_Bays).
  • In Type Properties, define Vertical and Horizontal Grid Layouts:
    • Fixed Distance: reliable, fabrication-friendly spacing.
    • Fixed Number: ideal when bays must divide evenly between boundaries.
    • Maximum Spacing: lets Revit add grids as required up to a limit.
  • Set default Border and Interior mullion types for both directions to minimize manual placement.
  • Assign a default panel (System Panel: Glass, Solid, or Empty) and override with specific panels later.

Place and refine grids efficiently

  • Work in elevation/section for precision; Tab-select to cycle between segment, full grid line, and chain selections.
  • Use Align and Lock to reference planes or levels for door heads, transoms, and datum-critical grids.
  • Use Add/Remove Segment to merge adjacent panels or create openings without breaking the entire grid.
  • Pin critical grids after alignment to prevent accidental moves.

Mullion control that scales

  • Rely on Type-driven border vs interior mullions to automate most conditions; swap types globally for rapid iteration.
  • For corners, use dedicated Corner Mullion types (L, V, or trapezoid). Align the corner strategy with glazing and sealant detailing.
  • Use custom profiles sparingly—keep them lightweight. Complex gasket/pressure plate details belong in detail views, not in model geometry.
  • Where spans grow, consider a “structural” mullion type (larger profile) on select grid lines rather than everywhere.

Panels, doors, and special conditions

  • Replace a panel with a Curtain Wall Door family directly by selecting the panel and swapping its type.
  • Use System Panel: Solid for spandrels; control finish via material parameters and apply a separate panel type for consistent scheduling.
  • For uneven edges or sloped tops, keep the wall’s sketch simple; let border mullions follow the boundary rather than over-modeling the frame.
  • For true sloped glazing or non-vertical faces, consider a Curtain System by Face for stability and better performance.

QA/QC and documentation

  • Create a Mullion Schedule by Type to track counts and lengths; add a calculated value for total linear footage.
  • Use a Curtain Panel Schedule to verify glass types, spandrel coverage, and special panels (doors, louvers, opaque).
  • Tag panels and mullions with clear type designations; drive consistency with view templates and filters by type name prefix.

Performance practices

  • Prefer type-driven layout over dense manual grids to cut regeneration time.
  • Limit custom mullion/profile variety; standardize on a concise library curated with your team.
  • Use Medium detail for coordination; reserve Fine detail for close-up sheets only.
