Revit Tip: Start projects with the correct Metric or Imperial Revit template

Start every project from the correct Metric or Imperial template to prevent annotation, plotting, and content inconsistencies later.

Why it matters

  • Lineweights and patterns are calibrated differently in Metric vs. Imperial templates; the wrong start leads to muddy or too-light plots.
  • Dimension/text styles, arrowheads, and titleblocks are sized for A-series (metric) or ARCH/ANSI (imperial) sheets.
  • Family templates and content libraries reference expected units; mixing units can mis-size geometry or break formulas.

Start the right way

  • New project: Browse to your office template (e.g., Office_Default_Metric.rte or Office_Default_Imperial.rte). If none, start from Autodesk’s Default Metric/Default Imperial, then save as your standard.
  • Install content packs for your unit system (Metric or Imperial) so doors, windows, tags, and titleblocks load with the right scales. If you need both, install both libraries and label folders clearly.
  • Manage > Project Units: Confirm Discipline-specific formats (Length, Area, Slope, Angle), rounding, and zero suppression. Set early and lock via a project kickoff checklist.
  • Load families built from matching unit family templates (Metric/Imperial .rft). Use proper parameter types (Length/Area) instead of unitless “Number.”
  • For type catalogs, prefer unit-aware values; verify imported sizes are converting as intended.

Annotations and plotting

  • Dimension/Text styles: Validate text height, tick/arrow size, witness offsets, and units label formatting.
  • Lineweight table: Confirm pen weights print correctly at common scales (1:50, 1:100 or 1/8”=1’-0”, 1/4”=1’-0”).
  • Titleblocks: Use A0–A4 for metric or ARCH/ANSI for imperial. Ensure view titles and revision tags match sheet standards.

Working with mixed-unit teams

  • Link RVT from other units without converting the host; Revit stores internally in feet and handles display per-project.
  • Import/Link DWG: Set correct units in the dialog to avoid scaling issues.
  • Shared coordinates: Establish once; units won’t change coordinate math but do affect readouts and documentation.
  • Exports: Set DWG/IFC units explicitly to meet deliverable requirements.

Fixing a project that started in the wrong template

  • Manage > Project Units: Switch display units and precision as needed.
  • Transfer Project Standards from the correct unit template for Dimension Styles, Text, Lineweights, Object Styles, Arrowheads, and View Templates.
  • Swap titleblocks and re-load unit-matched families; validate critical dimensions.
  • Audit schedules and set Field Formatting to desired units (e.g., m² vs. SF).
  • Run print tests at target scales to confirm legibility.

Governance tips

  • Maintain two vetted office templates (Metric and Imperial) with identical naming conventions and parameter GUIDs.
  • Segregate content libraries by unit with clear folder names and publish paths in Options > File Locations.
  • Kickoff checklist: unit choice, sheet set, view templates, titleblocks, and content sources—review before modeling.
