Revit Tip: Standardize Window Sill and Head Heights in Revit

Consistent window sill and head heights improve both design quality and documentation reliability. In Revit, these values are controlled through a combination of instance and type parameters, so understanding where each value belongs prevents coordination issues later.

Start by selecting a window and reviewing the Properties palette. The key setting is usually Sill Height, an instance parameter that controls the vertical distance from the host wall’s base level to the bottom of the window opening. Because it is instance-based, different windows of the same type can be placed at varying sill heights when the design requires it.

  • Use a standard sill-height strategy: Establish common values for typical conditions, such as low residential windows, office windows, clerestories, and windows at accessible locations.
  • Set sill heights intentionally: Do not rely on the last-used placement value. Confirm the sill height immediately after placing windows, especially when working across several levels.
  • Check the host level: A window’s sill height is relative to the wall base constraint. If a wall is based on an unexpected level or offset, the resulting window elevation may be incorrect.

Head height needs a little more attention. In many window families, it is not a directly editable project parameter. Instead, the head elevation is calculated from the sill height plus the window’s height:

Head Height = Sill Height + Window Height

For example, a window with a 3'-0" sill height and a 4'-0" height will have a head height of 7'-0". If the required head alignment is 7'-0", you can change the sill height, select a different window height, or create a dedicated family type that meets the condition.

For documentation, add a Head Height parameter to window schedules whenever possible. This can be a calculated value based on sill height and family height, or a shared parameter managed through your office standards. A visible head-height column gives the team a quick way to identify inconsistent openings before sheets are issued.

  • Use elevation and section views: Plan views are useful for placement, but elevations and sections verify actual vertical alignment.
  • Align related openings: Use Revit’s Align tool to coordinate window heads with doors, curtain wall transoms, interior glazed partitions, or adjacent windows.
  • Review wall joins and stacked conditions: A correctly placed window can still look wrong if wall layers, reveals, or adjacent façade elements create misleading visual breaks.
  • Coordinate with structural and MEP teams: Confirm that window heads do not conflict with beams, duct routes, fire dampers, or required structural headers.

When creating custom window families, expose width and height as clear type parameters, and ensure the geometry flexes correctly at each size. Avoid embedding fixed dimensions that prevent reliable head-height coordination. If your project frequently uses standard head elevations, create named types such as “4x4 Head 7-0” or “3x5 Head 7-0” rather than allowing uncontrolled variations.
