Today’s focus: Splitting Topos and Subregions/Sub-Divide. Mastering these tools keeps your site model clean, fast, and ready for phasing and documentation.

Split vs Subregion/Sub-Divide — choose wisely

  • Use Subregion (Toposurface) or Sub-Divide (Toposolid, Revit 2024+) to change surface material/graphics without creating a new element. Ideal for walks, planting beds, or pavement patterns.
  • Use Split to create separate site elements. Best for phasing (existing vs new), worksharing boundaries, or large campuses where different teams own different areas.
  • Avoid splitting to show only material changes—subregions are lighter and keep triangulation more stable.

Fast workflows

  • Toposurface (2023 and earlier)
    • Create subregion: Massing & Site > Subregion. Sketch closed loops; use Pick Lines for crisp edges. Finish and assign material.
    • Split surface: Massing & Site > Split Surface. Sketch a closed boundary to separate areas into individual toposurfaces (each can carry its own phase/workset).
    • Existing-to-new grading: Use Graded Region to duplicate existing, then edit points or add contours on the new surface.
  • Toposolid (2024+)
    • Sub-Divide: Massing & Site > Sub-Divide. Sketch regions to assign different surface materials while keeping one toposolid.
    • Split Toposolid: Massing & Site > Split. Produces separate toposolid elements for phasing, packages, or performance isolation.
    • Graded Region: Duplicate existing toposolid to represent proposed grading; edit points, edges, or contour lines.

Accuracy and performance tips

  • Simplify boundaries: keep subregions simple; avoid tiny slivers and overly segmented curves—fewer vertices = faster regen and cleaner triangulation.
  • Prep CAD surveys before creation: close polylines, remove overlaps, delete spikes. Clean input dramatically reduces topography artifacts.
  • Use Pick Lines with offsets for uniform paths; then manually smooth corners only where needed.
  • Reserve Paint for small patches and studies; prefer Subregion/Sub-Divide for repeatable standards and scheduling workflows.

Phasing and documentation

  • Subregions/Sub-Divides inherit the host’s phase. If you need demolition or new construction sequencing, Split into separate elements first.
  • For curb reveals, road crowns, and thick assemblies, model Floors/Roofs with shape editing instead of “raising” the topo; this yields better control of edges and constructability.
  • Use view filters by material or subregion name to color-code site uses for presentation sets.

Troubleshooting

  • Jagged edges around subregions: reduce boundary points; replace splines with arcs.
  • Unexpected gaps after Split: ensure closed loops and no self-intersections; repair by Edit Boundary and re-snap.
  • Slow views: too many small subregions. Consolidate or replace with drafting patterns at detail scale.
