Revit Tip: Revit IFC Export Configuration and Quality Control

Exporting an IFC model from Revit is more than a file-saving task: it is a critical coordination step that determines how reliably your BIM data is interpreted by consultants, contractors, owners, and downstream applications. A disciplined IFC workflow helps preserve geometry, classifications, property data, and spatial relationships outside the Revit environment.

Before exporting, confirm the required IFC schema with the receiving team. While IFC2x3 remains common on many projects, IFC4 may be required for more current workflows. Do not assume that the newest format is always the correct choice; the project BIM execution plan and the recipient’s software capability should govern the decision.

• Export only what is needed. Create a dedicated 3D coordination view for IFC export. Hide categories, links, design options, demolition elements, or presentation-only content that the recipient does not need. A cleaner model produces a smaller and more useful IFC file.
• Use a view-based export. In the IFC export settings, enable the option to export only elements visible in the active view when appropriate. This gives you precise control over the issued model and avoids accidentally sharing incomplete, internal, or irrelevant content.
• Verify phases and design options. IFC exports reflect the view settings. Confirm the active phase, phase filter, discipline, detail level, and design option before export. A coordination model that includes demolition items or excludes the selected option can create serious confusion.
• Check categories and family classifications. Revit families do not always map to IFC entities as expected. Review IFC export class mappings, especially for custom families, specialty equipment, façade components, and in-place elements. Correct mappings make the model easier to filter, quantify, and validate in other BIM platforms.
• Maintain meaningful parameters. Shared parameters and properly structured type/instance data can be exported as IFC property sets. Ensure key information such as asset IDs, fire ratings, manufacturer data, system classifications, and specification references is consistently populated before issuing the file.
• Coordinate origins and coordinates. An IFC located far from the expected origin can be difficult to federate and may perform poorly in coordination software. Confirm shared coordinates, survey point strategy, project base point usage, and the export coordinate option with the project team.

Use the Modify Setup option in Revit’s IFC export dialog rather than relying entirely on default settings. This is where you can select the IFC version, establish property-set behavior, specify space boundaries, choose coordinate settings, and save a named export configuration for repeatable project use. Saving a standardized setup is particularly valuable for teams that issue IFC files regularly.

After export, validate the file independently. Open it in an IFC viewer or coordination platform and check several representative items: walls, doors, floors, rooms or spaces, structural members, MEP systems, and custom content. Review both geometry and data. Confirm that object names, IFC classes, elevations, locations, and essential properties are present and understandable.

A practical quality-control routine is to compare the IFC against the source Revit view:

• Check model extents, levels, and orientation.
• Confirm that expected elements are included and unwanted elements are excluded.
• Inspect a sample of custom families for correct IFC classification.
• Verify room, space, or zone data if the deliverable requires it.
• Record the Revit version, IFC schema, export setup name, date, and revision with each issue.
