Revit Tip: Revit Dimension Type Standards and Best Practices

Make dimensions unambiguous, consistent, and standards‑compliant by investing a few minutes in well-structured Dimension Types.

Start with a clear type strategy

  • Duplicate the stock “Linear Dimension Style” into a small, intentional set (e.g., A-ANNO-DIM-3.0mm-Tick, A-ANNO-DIM-2.5mm-Arrow, A-ANNO-DIM-ANG for angles).
  • Mirror this pattern for Spot Elevation, Spot Slope, and Spot Coordinate so related styles look and print alike.

Tune units and precision for readability

  • Use rounding that avoids clutter; enable “Suppress trailing 0s” and “Suppress 0 feet” to remove 0'-0" noise.

Control text and graphics for clean plots

  • Choose tick marks for plans/sections and arrowheads for details per company standards. Keep witness line offset and extension lengths uniform.
  • Object Styles and View Templates can standardize line weights/colors for the Dimensions category—align these with sheet output at common scales.

Equality, prefixes/suffixes, and content rules

  • Set “Equality display” per use case: EQ for architectural strings; “Value” for fabrication; “Segments” when each segment must print.
  • Use prefixes/suffixes in the type (e.g., ±, CL) rather than freeform edits, so consistency survives updates.
  • Avoid “Replace With Text.” If you must annotate, use the angle bracket method: add a prefix/suffix around “<>” so the live value remains parametric (e.g., “CL <>”).

Speed and accuracy in production

  • Assign shortcuts (DI aligned, DL linear, DA angular) and let Revit remember the last used type to minimize clicks.
  • Use Tab to refine references and lock critical dimensions to reference planes for robust behavior during design changes.
  • For façade or grid strings, place one baseline string, set EQ as needed, then copy with constrained offsets to keep alignment consistent.

QA and maintenance

  • Regularly review Manage > Warnings for “Dimension text has been overridden.” Resolve or replace with parametric annotations.
  • Purge redundant dimension types; keep only the set documented in your standards manual.
