Revit Tip: Establish Consistent Revit Line Style Standards

Consistent line styles make Revit documentation easier to read, easier to coordinate, and more reliable from one sheet to the next. Rather than applying one-off graphic overrides, establish a small, purposeful library of line styles that communicates design intent clearly.

In Revit, a line style combines three properties:

  • Line Weight — the plotted thickness of the line.
  • Line Color — the visual color used in views and output.
  • Line Pattern — solid, dashed, centerline, or a custom pattern.

Create and manage line styles through Manage > Additional Settings > Line Styles. These styles are primarily intended for detail lines, symbolic lines in families, and other annotation-driven graphics. They are not a replacement for Object Styles, which control the default appearance of model categories such as walls, doors, structural framing, and furniture.

A practical line-style system begins with clear naming. Use names that explain both the purpose and, where helpful, the graphic behavior. For example:

  • Detail - Existing
  • Detail - Demolition
  • Detail - Hidden
  • Detail - Centerline
  • Detail - Overhead
  • Detail - Property Line
  • Detail - Matchline

Using a prefix such as “Detail -” keeps related styles together in the Line Style list and reduces the chance that users will select an inappropriate option. Avoid generic names such as “Dashed Line 1” or “Thick Blue,” which describe appearance but not purpose. A future project team member should understand when to use the style without opening a standards manual.

Before creating a new style, confirm whether Revit already has a suitable built-in pattern or whether the requirement should be controlled through a view template. Excessive custom styles can quickly make a project template difficult to maintain. A focused set of approved styles is more valuable than a long menu of nearly identical choices.

For printed documentation, line weight deserves special attention. Revit line weights are mapped to actual plotted widths through Manage > Additional Settings > Line Weights. A line that looks appropriate on screen may print too heavy or too light depending on the view scale and print configuration. Test critical details at their intended sheet scale, especially when using very fine dashed or centerline patterns.

Use line styles consistently in these situations:

  • Detail lines that supplement the model in enlarged construction details.
  • Symbolic lines within families, where graphics must display predictably in plan, elevation, or section.
  • Drafting views used for standard diagrams, legends, and typical details.
  • Temporary coordination graphics that must be visually distinct but still conform to office standards.

Do not use detail line styles to “fix” a model element that displays incorrectly across multiple views. Instead, investigate the element’s category, subcategory, material, object style, visibility/graphics settings, filters, and view template. This preserves the model’s intelligence and prevents manual drafting from masking a coordination issue.

For teams, add your approved line styles to the project template and document their intended use in a short BIM standards guide. When transferring standards from another project, use Manage > Transfer Project Standards carefully; review the selected items so that unrelated settings are not overwritten.

A well-managed line-style library is a small investment with a major documentation payoff. It supports legible drawings, reduces graphic inconsistency, and helps every contributor produce sheets that look deliberate and coordinated.
