Revit Tip: Enhancing Team Collaboration with Revit's Linked Models Feature

When working on complex projects, it's common to have multiple teams working on different aspects of the design. Utilizing Revit's Linked Models feature can significantly enhance collaboration and coordination between these teams. Here's how to improve collaboration using this powerful feature:

  • Establish Clear Standards: Before linking models, establish and communicate clear standards for naming conventions, level of detail, and file organization. This ensures that everyone is on the same page and reduces confusion.
  • Link Models Correctly: Use the "Insert" tab and select "Link Revit" to bring another team's model into your project. Ensure that you link by shared coordinates so that all models are correctly positioned relative to each other.
  • Manage Visibility: Linked models can be toggled on and off and have their visibility settings adjusted for clarity. Use Worksets and Filters to control what you see from the linked model.
  • Monitor Changes: Regularly reload links to ensure you are working with the most up-to-date versions of each team's model. This can be set to notify users of changes when opening the project.
  • Coordinate with Copy/Monitor: The Copy/Monitor tool can be used to copy elements from linked models into your project for closer coordination. It also allows you to monitor changes and check for discrepancies.
  • Collaborate with Commenting: Use the "Communicator" panel to discuss issues and changes directly within Revit. This reduces the need for external communication platforms and keeps discussions in context.
  • Utilize Worksharing: When multiple users need to work on the same project, enable Worksharing. This allows for simultaneous work on different parts of the model without conflicts.
  • Interference Check: Use the "Collaborate" tab to run interference checks between your model and linked models. This helps identify and resolve clashes before they become problems on-site.
