Revit Tip: Efficient 3D coordination with Revit section boxes

Section boxes in 3D views are one of the fastest ways to focus coordination, reduce visual noise, and speed up navigation in large Revit models.

  • Enable and manipulate quickly
    • Open a 3D orthographic view, then in Properties, check Section Box. Drag the grips to frame only what you need.
    • Use the Selection Box command (default shortcut: BX) after selecting elements to auto-fit a section box to them.
    • If the box isn’t visible, check Visibility/Graphics > Annotation Categories > Section Boxes.
  • Get precise framing with Orient to View
    • Right-click the ViewCube > Orient to View > pick a Plan/Section/Elevation/Callout to align the 3D view and generate a perfectly scoped box.
    • Save Orientation and Lock View to preserve coordination snapshots and avoid accidental orbit or box edits.
  • Standardize coordination views
    • Duplicate 3D views for floors, wings, or systems (e.g., 3D_Coord_Level 02, 3D_Coord_Core).
    • Apply a View Template that standardizes Detail Level, Visual Style, Filters, and Link visibility; note templates control the Section Box setting (on/off) but not its extents.
    • Use consistent naming and browser organization so the team can find the right 3D slices fast.
  • Coordinate across links
    • Section boxes cut both host and linked RVT models in the active view, helping isolate clashes between trades.
    • Pair section boxes with view filters (by workset, discipline, or parameter) to emphasize what matters during reviews.
    • Keep heavy links unloaded in non-coordination views to improve performance; load only what you need for the boxed view.
  • Performance and clarity
    • Tighter boxes dramatically reduce geometry on-screen, improving pan/orbit responsiveness in large projects and point clouds.
    • Use Hidden Line or Shaded (no edges) for fast navigation; turn off shadows and transparency unless needed.
    • Remember: section boxes aren’t available in perspective views—use orthographic 3D for coordination.
  • Export and issue tracking
    • Export NWC from scoped 3D views for focused Navisworks clash sets.
    • Publish boxed 3D views to the cloud to give reviewers a lightweight, no‑noise model slice.
  • Automation and advanced tips
    • Use Dynamo or NOVEDGE-recommended add-ins to auto-create “3D by Level/System” views and set section boxes from levels/grids.
    • Create a keyboard shortcut for Selection Box (BX) and Duplicate View to speed iterative coordination.
    • Combine with Interference Check and color filters to turn clashes into clear, shareable 3D snapshots.

Practical workflow: Select problem elements (e.g., ducts vs. beams) > press BX to isolate > apply your coordination View Template > color by system/discipline > Save Orientation and Lock > export NWC or place the 3D view on a sheet. This keeps the team focused on just the area in question and accelerates resolution.
