Revit Tip: DWG Cleanup and Revit Link Best Practices

Clean DWGs before linking them into Revit to reduce file size, eliminate warnings, and keep coordinates trustworthy.

Why it matters

  • Prevents bloated RVT files and slow navigation.
  • Reduces “far from origin” and “line slightly off axis” warnings.
  • Improves snap accuracy, visibility control, and print consistency.

In AutoCAD: a focused 10–15 minute cleanup

  • Audit and Purge
    • AUDIT (fix all), then -PURGE > All, repeat until nothing remains.
    • -PURGE > Regapps to strip registered app data.
    • OVERKILL to remove duplicates, overlaps, and tiny objects.
  • Flatten and simplify
    • Set UCS to World; FLATTEN 3D geometry you only need as 2D (yes to convert splines).
    • Delete hatches, raster images, OLEs, and wipeouts you don’t need.
    • Explode/burst overly nested blocks; keep ByLayer properties.
  • Layer and linetype hygiene
    • Enforce ByLayer for color/linetype/lineweight; remove ByBlock overrides.
    • LAYDEL or MERGE junk layers into a minimal, logical set.
    • Reset annotation scales: SCALELISTEDIT > Reset; set LTSCALE and PSLTSCALE to 1.
  • Units, origins, and Xrefs
    • UNITS: set the intended unit; confirm INSUNITS matches (inches or mm are typical).
    • Move model close to 0,0,0 in WCS if georeferencing isn’t required.
    • Resolve Xrefs: ETRANSMIT to consolidate or BIND cleanly; avoid broken paths.
  • Final save
    • One more -PURGE All and AUDIT, then save to a recent DWG format.

Then in Revit: link safely (don’t import)

  • Use Link CAD, not Import CAD, to keep RVT lean and maintain control.
  • Positioning: use Origin to Origin only if you coordinated origins; otherwise use Shared Coordinates. Avoid Center to Center.
  • Set Correct Units explicitly (don’t rely on Auto-Detect if you know the source).
  • Color: Black and White for clarity; Current View Only if you need view-specific links.
  • Place links on a dedicated “CAD Links” workset so you can unload/close when not needed.
  • Pin the link; use a Scope Box and View Templates to standardize visibility.
  • Override Import Categories by layer (VG) to mute heavy lineweights or turn off junk layers globally.

Quality checks before you proceed

  • Do grid/wall snaps feel precise? If not, recheck units and flattening.
  • Are view pans/zooms snappy? If not, revisit the DWG to remove hatches/images.
  • Any warnings on link load? Inspect for far-from-origin and fix at the source.

Pro tips

  • Keep a repeatable DWG cleanup script or checklist for your team.
  • Archive the “raw” DWG and the “clean” DWG; link only the clean version.
  • Document assumed units and origin in your project setup notes for coordination.
