Cinema 4D Tip: Unified Color Management for Cinema 4D Pipelines

Color consistency starts with a single, explicit policy shared across your project, renderer, textures, and post.

  • Pick one working space, then stick to it
    • General motion design: Linear sRGB (Rec.709 primaries).
    • VFX and multi-app pipelines: ACEScg via OCIO.
    • Document your choice in the scene notes and share it with your team and vendors. If you need licenses or guidance, check NOVEDGE.
  • Set project-level color management upfront
    • In Project Settings, enable a linear workflow and define your display/view transform (typically sRGB/Rec.709 for standard monitors).
    • If you use OCIO/ACES, load the OCIO config, set Rendering/Working Space to ACEScg, and choose a display transform that matches your monitor (sRGB, Rec.709, or Display P3).
  • Classify textures correctly
    • Color images (albedo/base color, emissive, decals): interpret as sRGB/gamma-encoded inputs.
    • Data maps (normal, roughness, metalness, opacity, displacement, curvature, AO-as-mask): interpret as Non-Color/Linear.
    • HDR/EXR environment maps and lighting: keep Linear.
    • Use the Texture/Material Manager to verify and batch-fix color space flags per map type.
  • Align the renderer to the project
    • Match the renderer’s color management (legacy sRGB or OCIO/ACES) to your project settings.
    • Keep viewport, Picture Viewer, and render output on the same view transform to avoid surprises.
    • For Redshift pipelines and upgrades, browse Redshift at NOVEDGE.
  • Render and save with intent
    • For grading/compositing: 32‑bit float EXR in your working space (Linear sRGB or ACEScg). Include AOVs/Object Buffers/Cryptomatte.
    • For review/delivery: save display-referred JPG/PNG using the same view transform you previewed.
    • Avoid double transforms: what’s shown for display in Picture Viewer should not be baked into linear EXRs unless that’s your goal.
  • Post-production handoff
    • After Effects: set 32 bpc, enable Linearize Working Space. Use sRGB IEC61966-2.1 for Linear sRGB projects, or an OCIO-based workflow for ACES.
    • Nuke/Resolve: select the same OCIO config; set working/rendering space to ACEScg if used.
    • Deliver LUTs or view transforms used in look-dev so shots match downstream.
  • Monitor and proof
    • Calibrate your display and use an accurate OS ICC profile.
    • Evaluate critical shots on a reference display that matches your delivery color space.
  • Make it portable
    • Team Render/farm: package the OCIO config with relative paths; version-lock across nodes.
    • Add a project “Color Policy” note and a quick checklist for new artists.

Quick checklist: One working space; textures flagged correctly; renderer aligned; EXRs for comp, JPG/PNG for review; matching view transforms end-to-end. Need C4D seats or upgrades? Explore Cinema 4D at NOVEDGE.
