Concrete and stone succeed when they look imperfect at more than one scale. In Cinema 4D, avoid relying on a single noise texture: believable mineral surfaces combine broad tonal variation, medium aggregate detail, and fine pores, then use roughness and displacement with restraint. Start with a physically plausible base material, then build variation deliberately. Concrete is not simply “gray,” and stone is not simply a colored bump map. Both materials reveal their character through subtle shifts in color, reflectivity, erosion, and surface depth.

  • Establish a neutral base color. Begin with a slightly warm or cool off-gray for concrete rather than pure gray. For stone, choose a local color that reflects its type: limestone, granite, slate, sandstone, or cast stone. Keep saturation low unless the reference clearly calls for stronger mineral coloration.
  • Layer noise by scale. Use a large-scale noise or bitmap to create broad color zones. Add a second, smaller pattern for aggregate, veining, or mottling. Finish with very fine noise for pores and granular breakup. Each layer should contribute a distinct scale of information; duplicated noise at similar sizes usually reads as synthetic.
  • Drive more than color. Feed related—but not identical—variations into the material’s Roughness and Bump or Normal inputs. Darker damp-looking areas may be slightly smoother, while dry, dusty, or porous regions are generally rougher. Small roughness variation often makes a larger realism improvement than adding more color contrast.
  • Use displacement selectively. Reserve true displacement for silhouette-changing chips, seams, deep pits, and pronounced stone relief. Fine pores should normally remain in bump or normal detail to keep render times and mesh density under control. Test displacement at the final camera distance before increasing subdivision.

For a procedural setup, combine a low-frequency noise for overall tonal breakup with a sharper cellular or granular noise for aggregate. Remap each through a Color Ramp or equivalent node control so the effect is concentrated rather than uniformly visible. A common mistake is allowing noise to affect every pixel equally; real concrete has quiet areas as well as damaged or stained areas.

Surface history sells the material. Add masks for edge wear, vertical rain streaks, darkened recesses, construction stains, or patches of dust. Keep these effects directional and reference-driven. For example, rain marks should follow gravity, while dirt accumulation should favor protected cavities, horizontal ledges, and contact areas. Random stains scattered evenly across a wall rarely look convincing.

Projection choice matters as much as shading. Use UV mapping for assets viewed close-up or requiring precise bitmap placement. For architectural blocks, large props, and procedural materials, triplanar projection can eliminate visible seams and stretching quickly. Check the material scale against real-world dimensions: pores that are several centimeters wide will immediately make a building facade look miniature.

  • Preview under a neutral HDRI and a directional key light.
  • Inspect at both close range and final render distance.
  • Reduce bump strength until it is barely visible, then increase only if needed.
  • Break repetition by offsetting, rotating, or blending texture sources.
  • Use reference photos to judge scale, contrast, and weathering—not memory.

Finally, model the details that must catch real shadows: panel joints, broken corners, large cracks, masonry gaps, and chipped edges. Let the shader handle microstructure.
