Efficient UV packing turns a workable texture layout into a production-ready one. In Cinema 4D, the goal is not simply to fill every empty pixel: it is to preserve consistent texel density, maintain enough space between islands, and place important surfaces where they can receive the resolution they need.
Start in the UV Edit layout after creating and relaxing your UV islands. Before packing, inspect the layout with a UV checker material. This quickly reveals stretching, inconsistent scale, and islands that may be rotated in an inconvenient direction for directional textures such as wood grain, brushed metal, or fabric.
In Cinema 4D’s UV tools, select the islands you want to organize and use the packing command to distribute them within the 0–1 UV space. Packing is especially useful after a Relax operation, which often leaves islands with uneven gaps and wasted texture area. Let the packer rotate islands when orientation is not important; rotation can substantially improve coverage. However, keep orientation controlled when a texture has a clear directional pattern.
A practical packing workflow looks like this:
Padding should reflect the destination of the asset. For a high-resolution still render, a modest gap may be sufficient. For baked textures, animated assets, or real-time exports, increase the spacing to protect against edge bleeding. The exact amount depends on texture size: a margin that looks generous at 4K may become dangerously small when the same asset is rendered from a 1K map.
Do not chase 100% UV coverage at the expense of clean islands. Extremely tight packing can make later edits difficult and may create insufficient bleed space. A slightly less dense layout with predictable margins is usually more reliable than a perfectly filled square that causes artifacts.
For multi-material assets, consider whether every material truly needs its own full-resolution UV layout. Separating materials can simplify texturing, but it can also increase texture memory and management overhead. Plan the UV strategy around how the object will be rendered, textured, and delivered.
