Radial arrays are one of the fastest ways to create balanced, repeatable designs in Cinema 4D. From turbine blades and clock markers to architectural columns, product details, and abstract motion graphics, a Cloner in Radial mode gives you precise control without manually duplicating and rotating objects.
Start with a clean source object. This can be a single modeled element, a grouped assembly inside a Null, or even text and splines. Place it at the radius where you want the repeated element to appear, then make it a child of a MoGraph Cloner.
The most important concept is the source object’s axis and starting position. In Radial mode, Cinema 4D distributes clones around the Cloner’s center, but the source object’s local orientation affects how each clone faces. If every object appears rotated incorrectly, resist the temptation to fix every clone individually. Instead, adjust the source object’s axis, rotate the original object, or place it inside a Null and rotate the Null. This keeps the setup procedural and easy to revise.
For example, when building a fan or turbine, model one blade pointing outward from the center. Move that blade away from the world origin, place it under the Cloner, and use Radial mode. Increase the count to create the blade pattern. If the blades should follow the circle naturally, enable or adjust the Cloner’s orientation options as needed; if they should all retain a uniform direction, correct the source object’s local rotation before changing the Cloner settings.
For more sophisticated results, use MoGraph Effectors rather than breaking the procedural system:
Another useful technique is nesting Cloners. Build a radial array first, then place that Cloner inside a second Cloner to distribute entire radial modules across a scene. This approach is excellent for ornamental patterns, sci-fi interfaces, decorative ceiling fixtures, and complex product-visualization details.
Keep your setup efficient by cloning lightweight source geometry. Use instances whenever possible, and avoid making the Cloner editable until a downstream workflow absolutely requires real geometry. Procedural arrays remain flexible: changing one source object updates the entire design immediately.
