Bluebeam Tip: Streamline Drawing Revision Reviews with Batch Overlay

When a drawing set changes, comparing revisions sheet by sheet can be slow and error-prone. Bluebeam Revu’s Batch Overlay feature helps teams quickly visualize changes across multiple pages by layering old and new PDF sheets in contrasting colors.

Use Batch Overlay when you need to review coordinated revisions to architectural, structural, MEP, or civil drawing sets. Instead of manually opening each pair of sheets, Revu creates overlay pages that clearly highlight additions, removals, and movement.

  • Prepare your files: Make sure the previous and current drawing sets use consistent page labels or filenames. This makes matching sheets much faster.
  • Open the Batch menu: In Bluebeam Revu, choose Batch > Overlay Pages.
  • Add revision sets: Load the old documents as one group and the revised documents as the second group. Revu can match pages by page label, filename, or another selected method.
  • Set overlay colors: Assign a distinct color to each revision, such as red for the previous issue and green or blue for the current issue. Areas that align will blend, while differences remain easy to spot.
  • Confirm alignment: Use alignment points when necessary, especially when PDFs originate from different sources or have shifted title blocks. Accurate alignment is essential for reliable results.
  • Choose an output location: Save the generated overlay PDF in the project’s review folder so the entire team can access the same visual comparison.

Review the resulting overlay pages for shifted walls, revised dimensions, deleted notes, new equipment, or modified details. Pair this process with revision clouds and the Markups List to document decisions and assign follow-up items.

A practical workflow is to batch overlay the full set first, then use Compare Documents on high-risk sheets that need a more detailed pixel-level review. This combination helps reduce missed changes before estimating, coordination, or construction begins.
