Bluebeam Tip: Split large PDF sets in Bluebeam Revu

Massive PDFs slow reviews, printing, and sharing. Use Bluebeam Revu’s Split tool to create smaller, purpose-built files without losing fidelity or markups.

  • Prep for clean splits
    • Standardize page labels and bookmarks first. If needed, use AutoMark to generate consistent bookmarks from title blocks.
    • Decide on your split logic: discipline, sheet size, phase, or package.
    • If you’re distributing externally, consider Flatten to lock markups; keep originals unflattened for internal collaboration.
  • Run the Split command
    • Open the set, then choose Document > Split (naming may vary by version).
    • Split by Top-Level Bookmarks for spec divisions or plan disciplines, or by Page Range/Page Count for even chunks.
    • Choose a destination folder that mirrors your project structure (e.g., 01_Civil, 02_Architectural).
    • Use clear filename prefixes/suffixes so recipients instantly understand contents.
  • Post-split QA
    • Spot-check with Thumbnails and Bookmarks to confirm boundaries and order.
    • If hyperlinks are essential, run Batch Link on the new files to quickly rebuild cross-sheet references.
    • Add a Legend or cover sheet where needed so each split file stands on its own.
  • Workflow boosters
    • Use Sets to keep split PDFs logically grouped for navigation, printing, and markups—without merging them back together.
    • Pair splitting with Batch Slip Sheet to update packages when new revisions arrive.
    • Archive the original full set alongside the split outputs for traceability.

Pro tip: Splitting by top-level bookmarks works best when your bookmark hierarchy mirrors your deliverables. Align bookmark structure with how teams consume the documents—estimating, field crews, or trade partners.
