Bluebeam Tip: Recover and Revise Flattened Markups in Bluebeam Revu

Flattening markups is an important step before issuing a PDF, but it does not always have to be final. In Bluebeam Revu, Unflatten can restore eligible flattened markups so they can be revised, replied to, or removed without recreating the work.

Use this feature when a review comment, cloud, stamp, measurement, or other annotation needs correction after a document has been flattened.

• Confirm the PDF is eligible. Unflattening works only when the document was flattened in Revu with markup recovery allowed. It cannot convert ordinary PDF content, scanned images, or markups flattened by another application back into editable annotations.
• Open the appropriate command. In Revu, go to Document > Unflatten. Depending on the file’s settings, Revu may request the password established during the flattening process.
• Select the markup types to restore. Review the available options carefully. You may be able to recover annotations, form fields, and other flattened elements while leaving content that should remain permanent intact.
• Review the restored markups. Open the Markups List and verify that recovered items have the correct author, status, subject, and placement. This is especially important when the PDF is part of a formal coordination or closeout workflow.
• Make revisions, then flatten again. After correcting the necessary items, flatten the PDF for final distribution. If future edits may be needed, enable the option that permits markup recovery and protect it with a password.

A practical workflow is to save two versions: an editable review file and a flattened issue file. This preserves a clean record while giving the project team a reliable source file for future revisions.
