Bluebeam Tip: Create Reusable Custom Symbols in Bluebeam Tool Sets

Custom symbols turn Bluebeam Revu Tool Sets into a faster, more consistent markup system for your entire project team.

Instead of repeatedly drawing the same inspection point, equipment tag, safety note, or coordination symbol, create it once and save it for reuse. This improves drawing clarity, reduces repetitive work, and supports standardized reporting.

  • Build the symbol: Create the markup using Revu’s drawing, text, image, and measurement tools. For example, combine a colored circle, short label, and leader line to create a reusable “Verify in Field” symbol.
  • Group related markups: Select all components of the symbol, right-click, and choose Group. Grouping ensures the symbol behaves as one object when placed, moved, resized, or copied.
  • Add it to a Tool Set: Drag the completed grouped markup into a custom Tool Set in the Tool Chest. Give it a clear name so users can locate it quickly.
  • Use Properties Mode when appropriate: Right-click the saved tool and select Properties Mode if you want each new placement to retain the symbol’s appearance while allowing users to enter new text, labels, or other project-specific information.
  • Standardize visual language: Use consistent colors, line weights, labels, and subjects. A symbol should communicate the same meaning on every sheet and for every reviewer.
  • Share the Tool Set: Export the Tool Set file and distribute it to the team. This helps estimators, field staff, designers, and reviewers apply identical symbols throughout the project.

For best results, create separate Tool Sets for disciplines or workflows, such as architectural punch items, MEP coordination, quality control, or safety reviews. Keep each set focused; too many symbols can slow down selection and lead to inconsistent use.

When a symbol is used frequently, consider assigning a keyboard shortcut or placing its Tool Set near the top of the Tool Chest. Small workflow improvements add up quickly across hundreds of markups.
