Bluebeam Tip: Create and Deploy Custom Tool Chest Symbols in Bluebeam

Today’s tip: create and deploy custom symbols in the Tool Chest to standardize markups and accelerate reviews.

  • Design your symbol
    • Combine markups (text, shapes, lines, arrows); align and distribute for precision.
    • Set a clear Subject in Properties—this drives Legends, filtering, and reporting.
    • Group the elements (Ctrl+G) so they move and scale as one.
  • Save it to the Tool Chest
    • Right‑click the grouped markup > Add to Tool Chest > choose a Tool Set.
    • Right‑click the new tool in the Tool Chest to Rename for clarity and consistency.
    • Toggle mode:
      • Drawing Mode: places the symbol at the saved size/look.
      • Properties Mode: keeps properties but lets you draw/rescale on place.
  • Make it smart
    • Use the Sequence workflow to auto-number symbol placements (ideal for details, notes, and punch items).
    • Assign a default Layer so symbols stay organized and can be shown/hidden quickly.
    • Add Actions (hyperlinks) to jump to specs, RFIs, or web pages directly from the symbol.
  • Deploy to teams
    • Revu > Manage Tool Sets > New to create a project/discipline-specific set.
    • Export the Tool Set (.btx) and share; mark Read‑only to enforce standards.
    • Host in a Studio Project or a network location for centralized updates.
  • Use at scale
    • Visual Search > Apply Markup to place your symbol across matching details in seconds.
    • Insert a Legend to auto-list symbol usage by Subject, Color, and Page.
    • Flatten before issuing to preserve intent and prevent accidental edits.

Governance tips

  • Color-code by discipline; lock critical symbols after placement.
  • Version your Tool Set (v1.0, v1.1) and document changes in the set description.
  • Create keyboard shortcuts for frequently used custom tools to reduce clicks.
