Bluebeam Tip: Comparing Scanned and Vector PDFs in Bluebeam Revu

When reviewing revisions, not every PDF behaves the same. A scanned drawing is essentially an image, while a vector PDF contains selectable lines, text, and geometry. Bluebeam Revu can compare both types effectively—but preparation is essential for reliable results.

Begin by opening the two versions and confirming that they represent the same sheet, orientation, and approximate scale. Then use Document Compare to identify changes between the scanned and vector-based files.

  • Use Document Compare for change detection: In Revu, go to Document > Compare Documents. Select the older and newer files, then choose the pages to analyze.
  • Align pages before comparing: Scanned sheets can be slightly skewed or shifted. Enable alignment options and use matching drawing features—such as grid lines, building corners, or title block elements—to improve registration.
  • Expect scanned-file limitations: Revu can detect visual differences in raster content, but it cannot interpret scanned linework as intelligently as vector geometry. Small scan artifacts, dirt, skew, or compression can appear as changes.
  • Clean up the scan first: Rotate, crop, deskew, or enhance the scanned PDF before comparison. A clear, high-resolution scan produces a much more useful result.
  • Review results visually: The comparison output highlights additions, deletions, and modifications. Zoom into each flagged region before treating it as a true design revision.
  • Create a record: Save the comparison PDF or export a Markups List summary to document the review process for project teams.

For the best results, compare like-for-like files whenever possible: vector to vector or scan to scan. When a scanned archive drawing must be compared to a current vector sheet, focus on major layout, annotation, and dimension changes rather than tiny line variations.
