Bluebeam Tip: Compare Revised Drawings with Bluebeam Revu Document Compare

When a revised drawing arrives, do not rely on a visual scan alone. Bluebeam Revu’s Compare Documents feature helps identify changed drawing content quickly, reducing the risk of missed revisions in complex plan sets.

Use Document Compare when you have an original PDF and a revised PDF of the same sheet. Revu analyzes both files and produces a comparison document that highlights differences, making it easier to focus your review on information that has actually changed.

  • Prepare the files first: Confirm that both sheets have the same page size, orientation, and comparable scale. Clean alignment produces more reliable results.
  • Open Document Compare: Go to Document > Compare Documents, then select the original drawing and its revised version.
  • Choose the comparison pages: Verify that the correct sheets are selected, particularly when working with multi-page PDFs.
  • Review the results: Revu generates a new PDF with clouds or highlighted regions around detected additions, deletions, and modifications.
  • Investigate, do not assume: Some detected changes may result from shifted content, raster quality, or minor text-rendering differences. Zoom into each highlighted area before documenting the revision.
  • Mark up meaningful changes: Add callouts, status indicators, or responsibility notes to important revisions. These markups can then be tracked in the Markups List and included in a summary for the project team.

For best results, compare like-for-like exports. A vector PDF compared with a low-resolution scanned PDF can create excessive results. If sheets are not perfectly registered, consider using Overlay Pages first to evaluate alignment and revision movement visually.

This workflow is especially valuable for architectural, structural, MEP, and civil updates where a small revision can affect coordination, quantities, or field installation. Rather than reviewing every line on every sheet from scratch, use comparison results to direct attention where it matters most.
