Bluebeam Tip: Compare PDF Revisions in Bluebeam Revu with Document Comparison

Comparing two PDF revisions in Bluebeam Revu is one of the fastest ways to identify design changes before they become costly field issues. Rather than manually flipping between sheets, use Compare Documents to detect differences and create review-ready markups automatically.

To compare revisions:

  • Open one of the PDFs in Bluebeam Revu.
  • Go to Document > Compare Documents.
  • Select the current file and browse to the second revision.
  • Choose the relevant pages to compare. Revu can compare single sheets or multiple page ranges.
  • Review the alignment options before processing. Accurate page alignment is essential, especially when title blocks, page sizes, or scan quality differ.
  • Click OK to generate a results document showing detected changes.

Revu highlights changes with markups so reviewers can immediately see added, removed, or modified content. These results can be saved, shared in a Studio Session, or included in a Markup Summary for project documentation.

For more reliable comparisons, follow these practical guidelines:

  • Compare PDFs created from the same sheet size whenever possible.
  • Use clearly named revisions, such as A101 Rev 1 and A101 Rev 2, to avoid selecting the wrong files.
  • Run OCR on scanned sheets before comparison if the scan quality is poor.
  • Review detected changes carefully; comparison results identify graphical differences, which may include revised clouds, moved notes, or shifted title-block information.
  • Use Overlay Pages instead when you need a color-coded visual comparison of multiple revisions rather than automatically generated difference markups.

Document comparison is especially valuable for architects, engineers, contractors, and reviewers working through frequent drawing updates. It reduces manual checking time, improves accountability, and helps teams focus attention on changes that affect scope, coordination, and construction.
