Bluebeam Tip: Bluebeam Revu: Layering for Construction Sequencing

Today’s tip focuses on using Layers in Bluebeam Revu to present staged construction sequences clearly and convincingly.

  • Plan your layer structure
    • Adopt a numeric naming convention for order: 01-Demo, 02-Underground, 03-Slab, 04-Steel, etc.
    • Use discipline sublayers when helpful: 03-Slab:Formwork, 03-Slab:Steel, 03-Slab:Concrete.
    • Prebuild a “sequence template” PDF with all layers so teams start on the same baseline.
  • Enforce layer discipline with tools
    • Assign a default Layer to markup tools in the Tool Chest (Properties > Layer). Every placement lands on the right layer automatically.
    • For existing markups, right-click > Layer > Add to Layer to reassign quickly.
    • Lock “reference” layers to prevent accidental edits; disable “Print” for internal-only planning layers.
  • Build visual clarity for each stage
    • Color-code phases consistently (early = cool colors, late = warm) and set transparency to reveal underlying work.
    • Use hatch patterns for demolition, dashed outlines for future work, and solid fills for current phase.
    • Create a Markup Legend to communicate your color and pattern standards.
  • Present and iterate efficiently
    • Toggle visibility in the Layers panel to “play” the sequence during reviews.
    • Duplicate pages to create milestone snapshots while retaining the same layer schema.
    • Flatten deliverables with “Allow Markup Recovery” to preserve editability for internal revisions.
  • Keep sequences consistent across revisions
    • Use Batch Slip Sheet to carry markups (and their layer assignments) forward to new drawings.
    • Add the Layer column in the Markups List to audit anything placed on the wrong layer.
    • Share Tool Sets and Profiles so the whole team follows the same layer rules.
