Bluebeam Tip: Bluebeam Revu Layer Visibility Workflow

Use the Layers panel as your visibility command center—organize content, speed reviews, and share cleaner PDFs.

  • Name layers with purpose: Use clear, trade-oriented names (e.g., Arch-Anno, MEP-Ducts, Site-Existing). Consistent naming makes filters, searches, and handoffs easier.
  • Assign markups to layers: Select markups, open Properties, set Layer. Multi-select in the Markups List to move many items at once. This keeps QA notes, RFIs, and takeoffs separate from design content.
  • Make tools auto-layer: In the Tool Chest, set a tool’s Layer property, then update the tool so every future placement lands on the correct layer automatically—even if the layer didn’t exist before, Revu will create it.
  • Save layer states: In the Layers panel menu, save named on/off presets (e.g., “Review – Markups Only,” “Coordination – MEP Focus”). One click toggles complex visibility setups across pages and files.
  • Lock with intent: Lock reference layers (title blocks, backgrounds) to prevent accidental edits while still allowing reviewers to work freely on markup layers.
  • Print what you mean: Only visible layers print. Before generating a submittal, load the correct layer state so your output matches stakeholder expectations. For digital sharing, keep layers so recipients can toggle as needed.
  • Flatten with control: When finalizing, flatten markups to a dedicated layer to preserve drawing clarity while preventing accidental edits. In Revu eXtreme, Batch Flatten applies this across an entire set.
  • Declutter fast: Hide nonessential layers (images, heavy hatches) during takeoffs to keep navigation snappy and measurements precise.
  • Studio and reviews: In Sessions, use layers to segment disciplines and review phases; assign each discipline’s notes to its own layer so teams can focus without noise.

Pro tip: Pair layer states with Profiles so different roles (estimators, PMs, supers) see exactly what they need the moment a file opens.
