Bluebeam Tip: AutoMark Bookmarks from Headings in Bluebeam Revu

Turn long PDFs into navigable, client-ready deliverables by auto-generating bookmarks from headings in Bluebeam Revu.

  1. Verify text is selectable. If your PDF is scanned, run OCR (Document > OCR) so Revu can detect headings.
  2. Open the Thumbnails panel (left panel) and click AutoMark.
  3. Set Type to Bookmarks.
  4. Choose Source: Page Region, then click Select and draw a box around the heading/title area on a representative page.
  5. Set Page Range to All Pages (or a specific range), preview the sample text, and adjust the region if needed.
  6. Click OK to generate bookmarks. Revu will create a bookmark per page using the captured heading text.

Refine and organize:

  • Clean names: In the AutoMark dialog, use Find/Replace to remove prefixes/suffixes (e.g., sheet numbers) from the bookmark text.
  • Sublevels: Run AutoMark again on a secondary region (e.g., subsection titles), then drag and drop to nest bookmarks for a hierarchical TOC.
  • Speed sort: In the Bookmarks panel menu, use sorting options or collapse/expand all to audit structure quickly.
  • From labels: If you already used AutoMark to create Page Labels, use the Bookmarks panel menu to create bookmarks from those labels for one-click navigation consistency.

Quality checkpoints:

  • Consistency matters—ensure headings are in the same location and style across pages before selecting the region.
  • Use OCR language and accuracy settings to improve recognition on scanned drawings.
  • Test on a small page range first, then apply to all pages.
  • Flatten or lock only after you’re satisfied with names and hierarchy.

Pro tip: Save your AutoMark setup (region and options) as a repeatable workflow for the next project set to standardize deliverables.
