AutoCAD Tip: Using Intersection Object Snap for Precise AutoCAD Geometry

Intersection Object Snap (OSNAP) is one of the most reliable tools for creating exact geometry in AutoCAD. It identifies the precise point where two objects cross, eliminating visual guesswork and preventing small drafting inaccuracies from accumulating throughout a drawing.

Whether you are laying out construction lines, locating openings, extending utility routes, or placing dimensions, Intersection snap ensures the point you select is mathematically tied to existing geometry.

  • Temporary Intersection snap: While a command is active, press Shift + Right-Click and choose Intersection, or type INT at the point prompt. This is ideal when you need the snap only once.
  • Running Intersection snap: Open Object Snap settings by typing OSNAP, then enable Intersection. AutoCAD will then detect qualifying intersections automatically whenever a command requests a point.
  • AutoSnap marker: Move the cursor over the crossing of two objects. When the Intersection marker appears, click to acquire the exact crossing point.

Intersection snap works with many common object types, including lines, polylines, arcs, circles, splines, rays, and construction lines. It is particularly useful when creating detail geometry from reference lines. For example, if horizontal grid lines cross vertical centerlines, use Intersection snap to place columns, symbols, or annotation reference points exactly at each grid location.

A practical workflow is to begin a command such as LINE, CIRCLE, MOVE, COPY, or DIMENSION, then use Intersection snap when AutoCAD requests a point. This keeps new or edited objects connected to the intended design logic rather than merely positioned near it.

  • Use LINE with Intersection snap to start or end geometry at crossing construction lines.
  • Use MOVE or COPY to relocate objects from one intersection to another with confidence.
  • Use TRIM and EXTEND after creating accurate intersections to clean up excess geometry.
  • Use DIM commands with Intersection snap to anchor dimensions to meaningful, repeatable points.

Be aware that AutoCAD distinguishes between a visible intersection and an apparent intersection. A normal Intersection snap is used when objects actually meet in the same plane. If objects only appear to cross because of the current viewing direction, use Apparent Intersection instead. This distinction is especially important in 3D drawings, where objects at different elevations may look as if they intersect when they do not.

For best results, avoid enabling every available running Object Snap mode. Too many active modes can cause AutoCAD to select an unintended snap point, especially in dense drawings. Keep frequently needed modes such as Endpoint, Midpoint, Center, and Intersection active, then use temporary overrides for less common options. This provides both speed and control.

If the Intersection marker does not appear, verify that Object Snap is enabled with F3, zoom in closer to the crossing, and confirm that the objects truly intersect. Also check whether one object is on a frozen, locked, or nonselectable layer, or whether the apparent crossing is actually separated in the Z direction.
