AutoCAD Tip: Temporarily Hide Objects for Uncluttered AutoCAD Editing

When you need a clearer view without changing layer settings or deleting geometry, AutoCAD’s temporary object-hiding tools provide a fast, low-risk solution. They are especially useful in crowded drawings where a few objects obstruct the area you need to edit, inspect, or dimension.

Use the HIDEOBJECTS command to remove selected objects from view temporarily. The objects remain in the drawing database, retain all properties, and can be restored at any time. This makes the command ideal for focused editing sessions.

• Type HIDEOBJECTS at the Command line.
• Select the objects you want to hide.
• Press Enter to confirm the selection.

AutoCAD hides the selected objects immediately while leaving the rest of the drawing visible and fully editable. Unlike erasing objects, hiding is reversible and does not affect the drawing’s permanent content. Unlike turning off a layer, it affects only the specific objects you select rather than every object assigned to that layer.

A useful distinction is that HIDEOBJECTS removes only the selected items, while ISOLATEOBJECTS does the opposite: it temporarily hides everything except the selected items. Choose HIDEOBJECTS when a small number of objects are in your way. Choose ISOLATEOBJECTS when you need to concentrate on only a few objects within a much larger drawing.

For more control, check the OBJECTISOLATIONMODE system variable. This setting determines whether object isolation persists after the drawing is closed and reopened:

• 0 — Object hiding/isolation is temporary for the current session and is not saved with the drawing.
• 1 — The isolated or hidden state is saved in the drawing and can remain active when it is reopened.

In most production environments, setting OBJECTISOLATIONMODE to 0 is a safer default. It helps prevent colleagues from opening a file and wondering why expected geometry is missing. Before plotting, publishing, or issuing a DWG, always run UNISOLATEOBJECTS as a final check.

For a faster workflow, select objects first, right-click, and look for object isolation options in the shortcut menu. This reduces Command line input and makes temporary visibility control more accessible during active editing.

Object hiding is not a replacement for disciplined layer management, but it is an excellent short-term visibility tool.
