AutoCAD Tip: Streamline Drawing Edits with AutoCAD Selection Filters

Selection Filters help you target exactly the objects you need in a busy AutoCAD drawing, without manually picking through layers of geometry. This is especially valuable in architectural, MEP, civil, and manufacturing files where blocks, dimensions, hatches, and reference content overlap.

AutoCAD’s FILTER command creates a reusable selection criteria list. Rather than selecting objects visually, you define properties that objects must match. For example, you can select every circle on a specific layer, all red polylines with a particular linetype, or all blocks with a given name.

To start, type FILTER at the Command line. In the Object Selection Filters dialog box, choose a property from the Select Filter list, set the desired value, and click Add to List. Add as many conditions as necessary, then click Apply. AutoCAD returns you to the drawing so you can define a selection window or select objects manually. Only objects meeting the filter criteria are accepted.

  • Filter by object type: Select only lines, polylines, circles, hatches, dimensions, text, blocks, or other supported object types.
  • Filter by layer: Isolate geometry on a designated layer, even when that layer contains many different object types.
  • Filter by color or linetype: Find objects that do not comply with your office standards or identify temporary markup items.
  • Filter by block name: Select repeated symbols, equipment blocks, or annotation blocks for fast editing.
  • Filter by elevation: In 3D work, select objects located at a particular Z elevation.

A practical example is revising all door symbols in a floor plan. Instead of searching for each block individually, create a filter for Block Name equal to your door block name. Apply the filter, use a crossing window around the plan, and AutoCAD selects only those door instances. You can then update attributes, change properties, move the blocks to a new layer, or replace them with an updated standard.

Selection Filters become even more powerful when conditions are combined. Suppose you need to change only red polylines on the DEMO layer. Add an object-type condition for Polyline, a layer condition for DEMO, and a color condition for Red. The resulting selection is much more reliable than a broad window selection followed by manual deselection.

For quick, one-time property-based selections, QSELECT can be faster. However, FILTER is preferable when your criteria are complex, when you want to save the filter for repeated use, or when you need logical combinations. Use the Save As option in the FILTER dialog box to retain a named filter in the drawing. Saved filters can be loaded later, helping teams apply consistent cleanup and review procedures.

Keep these best practices in mind:

  • Use descriptive names for saved filters, such as Electrical Devices – Existing or Demo Polylines – Red.
  • Test a new filter on a small area before applying it to an entire drawing.
  • Combine FILTER with the Properties palette to make controlled bulk edits.
  • Use filters during quality-control reviews to locate objects that violate layer, color, or linetype standards.
  • Remember that locked or frozen layers can affect what is available for selection.
