AutoCAD Tip: Streamline AutoCAD Printing with Saved Page Setups

Save plot configurations in AutoCAD to make printing and PDF publishing faster, more consistent, and less prone to costly output mistakes. A saved page setup stores the plotting choices that define how a layout or model-space view is printed.

Rather than reselecting a printer, paper size, plot style table, scale, and orientation for every sheet, create named page setups for your common deliverables. This is especially valuable on projects with many layouts or when multiple team members need to produce standardized sheets.

• Open the Page Setup Manager: Right-click a layout tab and choose Page Setup Manager, or enter PAGESETUP at the Command line.
• Create a new setup: Select New, enter a descriptive name, and base it on an existing setup when appropriate.
• Define output settings: Choose the printer or PDF device, paper size, plot area, orientation, plot scale, plot offset, and plot style table.
• Assign it to layouts: In Page Setup Manager, select the setup and click Set Current for the active layout.

A practical naming convention is essential. Avoid vague labels such as “Setup 1” or “Final.” Instead, use names that communicate the intended output immediately, such as:

• PDF_A1_Mono_1-100
• PDF_A3_Color_1-50
• Plot_ArchD_Grayscale
• CheckPrint_Letter_Fit

For most professional workflows, create separate page setups for final PDF output, office plotting, review sheets, and client-specific paper sizes. Each setup can use a different plot device and paper format while maintaining the same plot style and lineweight standards.

Pay particular attention to these settings:

• Plot style table: Select the correct CTB or STB file to control plotted colors, screening, linetypes, and lineweights. A drawing that looks correct on screen can plot incorrectly if the wrong plot style is selected.
• Plot with plot styles: Confirm this option is enabled when using CTB/STB standards.
• Plot object lineweights: Enable it when lineweight assignments must be honored in the final output.
• Plot transparency: Turn it on only when needed, since transparency can increase plot-processing time.
• Scale: For layouts, plot at 1:1; control drawing scale through locked viewports. For model-space plotting, select the intended plotted scale carefully.

Once the setup is established, use PUBLISH to batch output multiple layouts. Applying a consistent page setup before publishing helps ensure every sheet has matching paper sizes, plot styles, and output quality. It also reduces the risk of one layout being plotted with “Fit to Paper” while another is plotted at a precise scale.

For templates, include approved page setups directly in your DWT file. New drawings will then begin with office-standard plotting choices already available. You can also import page setups from another drawing through Page Setup Manager, which is useful when starting on an existing project or adopting a client’s sheet standards.

Before sending files, always use Plot Preview to verify orientation, printable area, lineweights, and the correct sheet content. A well-managed plot configuration is a small setup task that protects the quality and consistency of every deliverable.
