When collaborating with teams that use MicroStation, AutoCAD’s DGNIMPORT command helps convert DGN content into editable DWG geometry. A careful import process protects drawing standards, limits cleanup time, and makes the resulting file easier to document, share, and plot.

Before importing, save a copy of the target drawing or begin from your organization’s approved AutoCAD template. This ensures the imported content can be placed into a controlled environment with the correct units, layers, text styles, dimension styles, and plot settings.

  • Start the command by typing DGNIMPORT at the AutoCAD command line.
  • Select the DGN file and review the available import options before confirming.

This is especially useful for checking whether critical symbols remain reusable blocks and whether text is editable rather than converted into geometry.

Always verify scale before editing. Measure a known distance with DIST or MEASUREGEOM and compare it to a reliable source dimension. If the imported drawing is incorrectly scaled, resolve the unit mismatch before adding dimensions, annotations, or new design work. Correcting scale later can affect block definitions, linetypes, hatch patterns, and annotation objects.

Use this practical post-import checklist:

  • Run AUDIT to identify and correct database errors.
  • Run PURGE carefully to remove unused layers, blocks, linetypes, and other definitions.
  • Use OVERKILL, where appropriate, to remove duplicate or overlapping geometry.
  • Check text fonts and styles for substitutions or formatting changes.
  • Inspect linework at several zoom levels for gaps, fragmented polylines, or unexpected lineweights.
  • Review layouts, plot styles, and viewport scales before issuing sheets.
  • Save the cleaned result as a separate DWG revision before starting production edits.

For files with complicated standards or repeated DGN exchanges, create a documented import workflow. Record the preferred insertion method, layer mapping decisions, cleanup commands, and quality-control checks. Consistency is far more valuable than solving the same translation issues on every project.
