When collaborating with teams that use MicroStation, AutoCAD’s DGNIMPORT command helps convert DGN content into editable DWG geometry. A careful import process protects drawing standards, limits cleanup time, and makes the resulting file easier to document, share, and plot.
Before importing, save a copy of the target drawing or begin from your organization’s approved AutoCAD template. This ensures the imported content can be placed into a controlled environment with the correct units, layers, text styles, dimension styles, and plot settings.
One of the most important decisions is how DGN levels will translate into AutoCAD layers. In MicroStation, levels serve a similar organizational purpose to AutoCAD layers, but the naming conventions and property controls may not match your CAD standard. Avoid treating an imported DGN as production-ready immediately. Instead, review the imported layer list in the Layer Properties Manager and identify:
